Jerry Fedewa, owner of Jerry Fedewa Homes, Inc., says he sees a lot of price pressure, "Some builders are racing to the bottom to offer the cheapest per square foot; we refuse to go there." Through the highs and lows of the housing market, he has remained loyal to the brand and the quality buyers expect -- "Where other builders are cutting material costs, we use the highest quality products, from the foundation to the roof." Fedewa received a call from an inspector a few days ago who said it was always a pleasure inspecting their homes because the quality is not what he usually sees in other homes.

After meeting with the customer, a building schedule and timeline are set up. The customer has full access to the progress of the project online, including the ability to interact with the building team and to choose materials, fixtures, and other amenities. "We have built for customers that are moving into the area and had not been able to see the home in person until closing. But, they were able to interact with their home's progress online; thereby, eliminating any surprises," says Fedewa.
They also pride themselves on meeting, and exceeding, industry standards. For example, floor plans are not only warm and pleasing to the eye, but also provide the best efficiency and airflow. They test for energy efficiency to the 2012 Energy Code and have HERS ratings consistently in the low 50's as well as one-half per hour air exchanges. Many factors came into play when signing on with Design Basics, such as plan flow, plan alterations and turn time, pricing, value, and service. "Design Basics' plans flow nicely and offer a lot of value when comparing to other designs. If an alteration is needed, the service department is very accommodating and provides a quick turn time. Based in the Midwest, they are also very keen to 'Midwest preferences' such as the importance of entry closets and drop zones," says Fedewa.

Jerry Fedewa Homes is the exclusive developer for the Sierra Ridge Estates Development near East Lansing and they are about half-way through the 99-lot development. They just completed the Beachwood (Design Basics' "Sunflower") to be used as their spec home and are very excited to showcase this two-story design. With the housing market picking up, they are gaining momentum and have a multi-family project in the works.
