Design Basics - ENTERTAINING

Part 2 in an 8 part series

1. Ceiling Heights.

Ceiling heights in entertaining areas today rarely extend more than 11-12- feet high, even in high-end custom homes, according to Designer Carl Cuozzo. Enjoy dramatic ceilings plus taller windows and doors without the practical hassles and energy loss of 2-story-high rooms.

.

2. Secondary entertaining space.

Having a separate place for kids’ entertaining means their Xbox games or loud conversations don’t disrupt the adults. If your entertaining centers on FUN, identify early on if you envision a wet bar or kitchenette. Finally, you’ll want to plan for specialized storage!

The optimum viewing distance to appreciate all the detail of a 60” HDTV is 8-feet from the screen.

3. Dining.

The Underwood has several eating options—bayed dining area, island snack bar and for some, the flex room will be repurposed as a formal dining room. Large holiday meals can also be accommodated by extending dining into the hearth room so everyone’s together!

4. Noise

Minimizing unwanted noise in open layouts is a challenge. Rugs, carpet and pad, and upholstered furniture help absorb sound. Products such as soft close cabinet doors, quieter appliances and exhaust fans reduce noise levels. Standard dishwashers are up to two and a half times louder than the quieter models! Also, locate the guest bathroom away from the entertaining area for privacy.
