Maryville Today
Letter from Our Administrator
May 2016
The title of this newsletter - "Maryville Today" - is a nod to the vibrancy of our world at Maryville. We offer long-term skilled care, short-term physical rehabilitation and memory care. We have a dynamic activities program with events 365 days a year. Residents and family members attend Mass and musical programs. From delicious meals to our newly-enhanced beauty shop, Maryville provides a world of service and care.
But when we first opened our doors in 1963, we welcomed residents as a nursing home. And we honor our heritage by celebrating National Nursing Home Week.
This year, National Nursing Home Week is celebrated from May 8-14. Our festivities began with our Mother's Day Tea on May 8. The week also includes:
  • Volunteer Tea: May 11 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Barbecue: May 12 at 11:30 a.m.
  • Ice Cream Social (and the announcement of our 2016 Rose Festival Princesses): May 13 at 1:30 p.m.
It's a very special time at Maryville. We hope you'll join us for as many of these special events as you can.
As we approach our 53rd anniversary on June 4, we are proud that Maryville exemplifies this year's National Nursing Home Week theme: "It's a small world with a big heart."
To us, that's "service with love."

Deepa Pelpola: Our Employee of the Month
Congratulations to Deepa Pelpola: Maryville's Employee of the Month for May 2016!

A graduate from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka, she is a Doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine. Deepa began working as a caregiver at Maryville Memory Care in Jan. 2015. She and her family moved from Sri Lanka to the United States about three years ago. They currently live in Beaverton, Oregon.

Deepa and her husband, Anthony, have been married for 21 years. They have two children. Their 20-year-old son, Jude, is an engineering student at Portland Community College. Their 15-year-old daughter, MaryAnne, has volunteered at Maryville Memory Care.
When Deepa is not working, she enjoys cooking, sewing and spending time with her family.
Maryville Memory Care Director of Health Services Alicia Owens said, "Deepa shows great concern for the well-being of the people who live here and always takes care to do the little things that make their days better - like making sure that a resident's bird feeder is filled or taking time to work on a puzzle with a resident."
In presenting the award, Maryville Assistant Administrator Michael Kilbury noted that families and colleagues alike praise Deepa for her concern, caring and kindness.
"Ham" and harmonicas: the adventurous life of Resident of the Month John Bookout
Though John Bookout has spent the majority of his life in Portland, Oregon, and the surrounding area, his heart and soul are in Wallowa County. It was there that John learned to appreciate the outdoors. As a kid he would spend limitless time with his family at his aunt's ranch: fishing, hunting, four-wheeling and camping. Little did he know at that time that his love for the outdoors would have such a lasting impact on his life.
Music, photography and ham radios have also played an important part in John's life. His love of family and travel are hallmarks of his life.
If you visit Maryville during a visit by "Accordion Joe" Szabo, you are likely to see John accompanying him on the harmonica.

Maryville is a Catholic health and wellness facility dedicated to providing long-term skilled nursing care, short-term physical rehabilitation and memory care.
