CONTRIBUTE to the MLS Silent Auction 2014

The MLS SILENT AUCTION is coming on March 21, 2014! As we speak, volunteers are combing Charlottesville for those great prizes and items to bid on. If you are one of the lucky ones that have a skill or talent that you would like to donate to the auction, the committee would love to hear from you! What could you donate? There are hundreds of ideas! Cake decorating, financial services, party planning, hair cutting, garden consultation, artwork, woodworking, handyman services, tutoring, fly fishing excursion, sports lesson, etc! The options are endless!  Alternatively, if you work for a philanthropic company or know the owner of a local business who you think would be willing to help our school, we have a sample/draft letter that you could use to see if they might want to contribute toward the Auction.  Please contact Sarah Gray Parrish at sarahgray30@yahoo.com.

LET'S PARTY at the MLS Silent Auction 2014

Are you interested in being a host for a Meriwether Mixer? The Meriwether Lewis Silent Auction is just around the corner on Friday, March 21 and we are hoping to offer another great batch of MERIWETHER MIXERS to our MLS families this year. These mixers are some of the best (and most profitable!) items we offer at the auction.

Just to get your creative juices flowing, here is a quick look at what was offered from years past:

  • Field Party for 1st grade class
  • Tequila Sunset (dinner, drinks, adults only in the summer)
  • British Garden Party (dinner, drinks, adults only with a British flair)
  • Pink Flamingo (Heavy appetizers and cocktails, girls night out)
  • Poker Party (poker for the Dads)
  • BBQ and Brews (dinner and drinks, adults only in the Fall)
  • Pool Party (End of the year party for the kids)
  • Flag Football, Soccer, Lacrosse, Field Party (sports party for kids)
  • Tennis or Squash Mixer (in the spring with light lunch)

These are just a few ideas for mixers....the sky is the limit with all of the creative parties you can create!  Gather up a group of friends and cook up a fun idea to get your MLS families partying together!  Wine and Yoga Mixer?  Movie in the backyard? Gardening Party? Princess Party? Camp out, Hiking and S'mores? The options are endless!!!

If you are interesting in helping to host an existing party or want to start a new party, please contact Sarah Gray Parrish at sarahgray30@yahoo.com by February 7!

Volunteer of the Month

thank you circle

Recognition is long overdue for January's two Volunteers of the Month,  Val Newcomb and Tom Zahorik.  Val and Tom have been involved in MLS PTO activities in one way or another for 6 years.  In particular the Board would like to recognize Val for the work she does coordinating the monthly Kid's Night Out events and Tom for keeping the Marquee current with all the school events.  Thank you Val and Tom for all the time and energy you have put into volunteering at the school!

Take a look at the notice board at the front of the school to find out more about Val and Tom.    Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and Val will be ready to hand over the reigns by summer 2015 when her youngest daughter graduates from MLS.  Anyone interested in taking on a bigger role in volunteering, please consider talking to Val to find out more about the position of the Kid's Night Out Chair.

Golden Apple Award Nominations

Golden Apple Award

The Golden Apple Award nominations are going on now! Do you have a teacher at MLS that you would like to nominate? Then do so now by going here to print out the nomination form.

The deadline for submission is Feb 12th so make sure to get in your nomination a few days early (you can turn in to the front office at MLS). Those candidates most likely to win the award are those who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and involvement in the community outside the school. Teachers who have won in the last three years are not eligible for the award this year. Those teachers from MLS are Pat Atkins, Michael Thornton, and Scott Williams. However, all other teachers are eligible.

SOL Testing Volunteers Needed
SOL

Six non-5th grade parents are needed to monitor halls during the 5th grade SOL testing on the mornings of March 18th and 20th.  The parents monitor the halls to keep them quiet and conduct students one at a time to the bathroom as needed. They do not go in with the student, but they make sure that students do not talk to other 5th grade students during testing.  It is a low-action and rather boring job--good opportunity to catch up on reading or computer work and is critical to helping testing to run smoothly.  Please sign up here if you are able to help.  Mrs. Geraty can answer questions about the process.
