New Hampshire Statewide Wood Energy Team
On September 11, 2013, Secretary Vilsack announced that more than $1.1 million in grants is being awarded to five organizations to form statewide wood energy teams in these States: Alaska, California, Idaho, Minnesota, and New Hampshire.
New Hampshire is on the cusp of becoming the Nation's leader in utilizing biomass, both wood chips and wood pellets, to gain energy independence from the use of home heating oil and propane. Sixty-three percent of the heat generated in New Hampshire comes from these petroleum products. New Hampshire has a positive track record for using wood to produce heat and power. It has the forest resource, the infrastructure of wood biomass fuel suppliers, and the regulatory climate to make things happen.

Wood Education and Resource Center (WERC) Project Highlights
Creating and Expanding the Market for Black Ash Baskets in the Northeast Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance (WERC Award Number 2011-DG-109) The focus of this project with the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance was to create and expand the market for ash baskets in the Northeastern United States by focusing on the following: 1. Identifying ash basketmakers among five Tribes (including the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation from New York) and their marketing and business needs; 2. Creating and expanding markets for ash baskets; 3. Providing arts entrepreneurship training for Native American basketmakers and other value-added forest product artists in Maine and New York; 4. Providing tools for longer term marketing support for ash basketmakers for successful businesses and connecting them with resources necessary for financial independence; and 5. Serving as a model for other Native American basketmakers and artists in the Northeastern forest States, including Vermont and New Hampshire. To learn more about the project, click here. EPA Proposes Updates to Air Standards for Newly Manufactured Woodstoves and Heaters
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing standards for the amount of air pollution that can be emitted by new woodstoves and heaters, beginning in 2015. The agency's proposal would make the next generation of stoves and heaters an estimated 80 percent cleaner than those manufactured today, leading to important air quality and public health improvements in communities across the country. The proposal would affect a variety of wood heaters manufactured beginning in 2015 and will not affect heaters and stoves already in use in homes or currently for sale today.
