Life Cycle Assessment of Solid Hardwood Flooring

Sustainable Resources Institute, Crystal Falls, MI

(WERC Award Number 2010-DG-109)

The goal of this study was to document the environmental impact of a typical wood products company manufacturing solid strip hardwood flooring through cradle-to-gate life cycle inventory. The completed project provides a report on hardwood flooring production details, methodology, and results of a life cycle inventory (LCI) and life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) for a hardwood flooring plant. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been completed in a manner consistent with the principles and guidance provided in the International Organization for Standardization.  Life-cycle impact assessment comparison models were developed for two flooring alternatives, engineered wood flooring and vinyl. Relative energy required for flooring production, magnitude of global warming impacts and carbon impacts, and other environmental impacts were compared.  To view the report, click here.

Technical Assistance Team

WERC Wood Energy Technical Assistance Team Improves Existing Wood Energy System Performance

Over the past two years the WERC Technical Assistance Team has worked with several facility owners to improve the performance of legacy wood energy systems.  The systems have ranged in age from 40-80 years of age while system efficiencies were below 50% indicating that both fuel use and emissions were a problem.  WERC technical assistance focused on better control of combustion air and fuel feed rates. The WERC Team helped these facilities improve combustion efficiency by more than 20% and reduced fuel use substantially.  Not only have both fuel use and emissions decreased, but the system improvements allowed the facility managers to utilize bark as a fuel source and to reduce or eliminate purchasing additional fuel on the open market.  Annual fuel savings from the improved systems ranged from $26,000 to more than $200,000 annually.  For more information on assistance to owners of existing wood energy systems,  please contact Lew McCreery at 304-285-1538.

Webinar - Status of Domestic Wood Packaging Material (dWPM)

January 24, 2014

The possibility of a requirement for all wood packaging material (WPM) to be "phyto-sanitized" arose in 2009 when the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) posted an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) to that effect.  This webinar on dWPM will cover the evolution of this specific issue as well as others in the time period from 2009 to the present.  The West Virginia University Appalachian Hardwood Center (AHC) will host the event.  The webinar is free, but attendance is limited so pre-registration is required.  Attendees will be able to ask questions of the presenters via a text based chat option.  For more information and registration, contact Jeff Slahor, 304-293-9423.
