Durham NH--In celebration of Public Lands Day, the Forest Service and the Big E Agriculture Department hosted a mural painting at the Big E (Eastern States Fair) which serves Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. With approximately 50 children and 12 student volunteers, marine life artisit Wyland painted 3 large canvases depicting different New England watershed scenes. Several thousand fair visitors were able to watch Wyland in action and enjoy the murals.
The painting event was located next to the USDA exhibit where participants could learn about New England's forests and agriculture and also pick up educational materials including Natural Inquirers, Pollinator posters and NRCS Water Cycle posters.
The impact of the mural painting continues beyond the fair.
- Several of the student volunteers, along with their classmates, will be conducting a service learning project with Dave Bloniarz (NRS) in the Springfield, MA area in relation to the tornado damage from 2011.
- A Boston Urban Connections (R9) partner is interested in programs involving forest/tree and water studies along with mural painting.
- The New York City Watershed Green Connections education program is considering using mural painting to help NYC and Watershed students connect.
- The Big E Agriculture Department is interested in hosting Wyland's Mobile Learning Experience in 2013.
- The 3 murals created this year will return to hang at the Big E in 2013.

Disability Awareness Month-Resources for the Disabled
Washington--The Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) is part of the U.S. Department of Education. RSA oversees grant programs that help individuals with physical or mental disabilities to obtain employment and live more independently through a variety of individualized services. RSA's major Title I formula grant program provides funds to State vocational rehabilitation agencies. State agencies provide services to eligible individuals, both directly and through a network of approved vendors. Services can include diagnostic services, vocational evaluation, counseling, training, restoration services, placement assistance, assistive technology, and support services necessary for the person to start and maintain employment. Find your State's Vocational Rehabilitation Agency.
The Center for Independent Living (CIL) was founded in Berkeley, CA, in the 1960s when a group of disabled college students joined forces to make the full academic and social life of the campus more accessible to themselves and others. CILs are run by and for people with disabilities and offer information on empowerment in the attainment of independence. A CIL encourages people with disabilities to make their own choices and works to open doors in the community to full participation and access for all. As community-based, cross-disability, non-profit organizations, the CILs provide peer support, information and referral, individual and systems advocacy, and independent living skills training. From the National Council on Independent Living Web site you can navigate to a page with links to all the States, to locate the CIL in your area.
