Second Annual National Bioenergy Day - October 22, 2014
National Bioenergy dayNational Bioenergy Day is a nationwide day to showcase
all kinds of heat and power generated by woody biomass and agricultural waste, from large-scale utilities to home heating stoves. This event will unite all aspects of the bioenergy supply chain, including foresters, landowners, manufacturers, power producers, and consumers. Last year's National Bioenergy Day featured 25 events in 14 states. Learn more at the  Biomass Thermal Energy Council's Web site.
Wood Energy Technical Assistance Team WERC Update
Elk Country Visitor Center
The WERC Wood Energy Technical Assistance Team recently completed a project in cooperation with the West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette, PA. The Sustainable Energy Fund provided a grant for energy-efficient provisions, including a biomass boiler that will heat the visitor center using cordwood. The team provided a feasibility study for the project and oversaw the installation of the boiler and associated plumbing requirements. The use of renewable energy to heat the facility will be included in education programs provided at the Visitor Center as a biomass energy learning component.

The Technical Assistance Team is also working with the U.S. Forest Service Southern Region Biomass Coordinator Dan Len to evaluate projects with the Georgia Department of Corrections in cooperation with the Georgia State Forester. Evaluations are complete for the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, GA, and the Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, GA. Both projects are moving forward for a more indepth investigation and potential funding under a new project funding mechanism recently approved by the Georgia legislature.

Several projects that were analyzed by the Wood Energy Technical Assistance Team are now under construction--the Narragansett School District and Saint Benedict Center in Massachusetts, Menominee Tribal Enterprises Combined Heat and Power project in Wisconsin, and the Holderness School in New Hampshire.
