SOS LogoCONNECT Partnership Announces 2015

Summer of Science

Programs for Elementary - H.S. Students

More than one thousand of the region's elementary through high school students will engage in enriching science and technology programs this summer, thanks to the public colleges and universities in Southeastern Massachusetts. The Summer of Science Programs were initiated by the CONNECT Partnership CEOs who see a clear connection between kids working hands-on with science at an early age and their ability and interest in majoring in science, technology, engineering & math (STEM) in college. Most programs offer scholarships to families unable to afford regular tuition. Click here for information on dates, locations and cost.

Envision the Future Program Update

The Southeastern Massachusetts STEM Network is pleased to announce that forty-eight girls, representing twenty communities throughout its region, will be participating in Envision the Future, a 5-day residential STEM experience, this July. Participants, ages 11 - 13, will engage in workshops and activities, designed by regional Stem professionals. The program aims to foster interest in STEM fields through a multitude of experiences including: Solve It (Biotechnology) Using DNA to solve a crime; Create It (Computing) Creating mobile apps and video games; and Build It (Engineering) Building a remotely operated vehicle. In addition, each girl will participate in a speed networking activity where they will meet and discuss careers with female STEM professionals.

Replication teams, consisting of educators, community members, business leaders and government officials, will accompany each participant. During the 2015-2016 academic year, these teams will replicate an element of the Envision the Future initiative within their communities. It is anticipated that this replication model will help to facilitate greater capacity for STEM programs throughout the region. Contact Katherine Honey for additional information on forming a replication team.

DCU Center
Worcester, MA

Don't miss the May 1 deadline for submitting a break-out session or exhibitor proposal for the 12th annual STEM Summit. Planners are seeking contributions and input from the state's diverse STEM community to develop sessions that address the Summit's topical strands: Early Education; K-12 Education; 2 Year Higher Education; 4 Year+ Higher Education; Out-of-School Time; Digital Education; Innovation/Entrepreneurship; Career Awareness & Workforce Development; and Research and Practice. Click here for additional information on both submitting a proposal and the Summit in general.

Proposol Reviewers Sought

Planning for STEM Summit 2015 is well underway and the Summit organizers are seeking volunteers to help read and score session proposals. Proposal reviewers should have some experience or background in the strand for which they volunteer to read - this year's nine strands include: Career Awareness and Workforce Development, Digital Education, Early Education, K-12 Education, Higher Education (2-year), Higher Education (4-year+), Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Out-of-School Time, and Research and Practice.

The majority of the review process will occur between May 18 and July 10, with July 10 as the date for final decisions. The organizers will provide all volunteers with a set of reviewer guidelines as well as a scoring rubric. Serving as a proposal reviewer is a great way to directly influence the quality and type of breakout sessions offered at the Summit. Interested applicants must complete the volunteer form no later than April 24, 2015.

"What are the Odds?" Workshop
May 5, 2015
4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Bridgewater State University

Games Teachers Play provides preK-12 teachers of mathematics an opportunity to share and learn about the world of engaging educational games and puzzles. Probabilistic reasoning is all around us, but our (and our students') probabilistic intuition is often weak. For better or for worse, we make many decisions based on probability. The "What Are the Odds" workshop will look at mathematical games and puzzles which are engaging and fun, but require extensive use of probability to win. Open to PreK-12 Educators.
