275+ Attend STEM Regional Meetings

Practical, engaging and inspiring were just some of the adjectives used to describe the 2014 SEMA STEM Regional meetings. More than 275 STEM stakeholders shared effective STEM practices and programs during spring meetings at Cape Cod Community College, Weymouth High School, Jordan Jackson Elementary School (Mansfield), and Old Rochester Regional High School (Mattapoisett).

Attendees visited exhibitors and learned about business and school partnerships, integrating STEM across the curriculum in music and art, federal and state legislative STEM initiatives, after- and out-of-school STEM programs, and use of digital technology to personalize STEM learning.

Presenters included kindergarten students from Weymouth's Academy Avenue School who joined more than 30 million students around the world and across the U.S. in an "Hour of Code," learning the importance of coding and computer science.

Innovative STEM programs in early childhood were highlighted. Markman Children's Programs in Attleboro and the Children's Museum of Greater Fall River focused on preparing students for the 2010 workplace and emphasized the critical role of early childhood educators in introducing STEM language and concepts.

Businesses, including AccuRounds of Avon, emphasized the need for new employees to have STEM and creative problem solving skills. School district presentations showed strategies they're using to align workforce and education. Initiatives included Mansfield's STEM Literacy Team, ORR's Science Vertical Team, Bourne's Evolving STEM Plan, and CCCC's work on developing a Cape Cod Regional STEM Plan.
