120 Discuss Workforce and Education Alignment at STEM Annual Meeting

About 120 individuals from government, industry, and education came together on October 16th in Attleboro, to discuss workforce and education alignment. Congressman Joseph Kennedy and DESE Commissioner Mitchell Chester joined Diane Ferrera and Patrick O'Connell, leaders at AccuRounds, for a panel discussion of STEM employment needs.

Congressman Kennedy, joining the conversation from Washington D.C. via Skype, claimed that STEM promotion in our vocational high schools, community colleges, and 4-year institutions is fundamental to ensuring that our region remains the preeminent innovation model in the country; however, we must keep in mind the need for "middle skills' employees, along with scientists and engineers. The panel was followed by a round table discussion allowing participants to brainstorm how educators, parents, community, and workforce leaders can inspire more students to enter the STEM fields. Some key takeaways from the discussion:
  • To be better prepared for STEM careers, students must improve soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills;
  • To inspire STEM interest in students, we need a coordinated effort from parents, teachers, community, and employers;
  • Workforce involvement in curriculum planning could help students better understand realistic applications of STEM and develop relationships with STEM employers.

News and Events From the Region

The Hour of Code

www.code.org

December 9-15, 2013

This December, Computer Science Education Week is organizing a massive campaign to encourage 10 million students to try an Hour of Code. Through the backing of Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and more, The Hour of Code is an introduction to computer science designed to demystify "code" and show that anyone can learn the basics. There will be a variety of hour-long tutorials everyone can do - on a web-browser, tablet, smartphone, or even with no computer at all.  Go to www.code.org to learn more.

We want Southeastern Mass to join the campaign and plan to introduce as many students as possible, of all ages, to computer science and coding. We are seeking to involve colleges, schools, afterschool programs, out-of-school time clubs and organizations such as the YMCA. Here are some more ideas of how you can respond to the call:

  • Could you partner with local schools or after school programs to bring students into your computer labs?
  • Could faculty, students, or staff go to a school or educational program to work with young people there, or Skype with a class?
  • Other ideas -- you are welcome to shape your program in a way that suits you!
If you are willing to consider involvement, please contact SE MA STEM Network Administrator Kathleen Kirby, as soon as possible, at: kathleen.kirby@connectsemass.org.
