SE MA STEM Network Annual Meeting Will Focus on Workforce and Education Alignment 

 

Join U.S. Congressman Joseph Kennedy, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Mitchell Chester, and manufacturing industry leaders Diane Ferrera and Patrick O'Connell of AccuRounds in a discussion moderated by Herald News publisher Lisa Strattan.. 

 

More STEM workers are needed across the whole educational spectrum, from high school graduates to certificate earners to associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree holders. How are we working to make sure students at all levels are aware of the available STEM employment opportunities? How are we preparing all students to be ready for jobs in STEM?

 

The discussion will be held on October 16th at the Brennan Middle School in Attleboro from 3-6PM. The meeting can also prove to be great way to network, meet potential partners, and gather resources. Click here to register.

Registration for the 2013 MA STEM Summit is Open


Sign up now for the statewide STEM Summit, November 13th at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough! There will be strands for workforce development, higher ed, K-12, early ed, industry, and more. Check the website to register and to stay up-to-date as new topics, speakers, and resources are added. Registration cost has been reduced to $25. 

 

 

Students and Recent Grads: Apply for a Life Sciences Internship 

 

The Mass Life Sciences Internship Challenge is a workforce development program focused on enhancing the talent pipeline for Massachusetts life sciences companies. The program connects college students (in both two- and four-year programs) with employers, and reimburses eligible companies for intern stipends. Applications are accepted year round!   Both companies and students can visit the website for more information and to apply.

K-12 Science/Technology/Engineering Standards Discussion

What knowledge and skills do students need in order to be considered college and career ready in science? Are the academic tracks for students entering science and engineering fields different from those who are not? Please join K-12, college and career representatives for a discussion of College and Career Readiness in science and technology/engineering to ensure that all students are prepared for the scientific and technological aspects of our state's post-secondary opportunities. This discussion is hosted by the SE MA Readiness Center. Cape Cod Community College's Fall 2013 Innovation Series begins Oct. 1 with "No Boundaries: Transforming Environmental Education", presented by Dr. Robyn Hannigan, Dean of the School for the Environment at UMass Boston. Dr. Hannigan's presentation is the first of ten, free, informational seminars focused on STEM. Green Ribbon Schools Webinar
October 3, 3-4PM

The webinar will provide an opportunity for teachers, students, administrators, and volunteers to learn about application procedures and related resources for the Green Ribbon Schools Award. The program honors schools and districts that are exemplary in reducing environmental impact and costs, improving the health and wellness of students and staff, and delivering effective environmental and sustainability education that incorporates STEM lessons, civic skills, and green career pathways. Explore Space with Astronaut Scott Tingle  

UMass Dartmouth Woodland Commons, Dartmouth

Join UMass Dartmouth students and faculty to listen to Scott Tingle, graduate of UMass Dartmouth, astronaut, Navy Commander, and fighter pilot. This is a rare opportunity to learn about space from the perspective of an astronaut. Thie event is free and reservations are not necessary. Doors open to the general public at 6:15PM. Sustainable Land Use: Tools for Communities

Conquering Catapults!
Cape Cod Collaborative Building, Osterville

JR. Tech's series of hands-on STEM workshops for middle school students begins October 15, with a program on how to build and design a life-sized catapult trebuchet. Writing for Science Fairs and Student Research 
Mass Academy of Math and Science, Worcester
October 17 and November 7, 9AM-3PM

The Mass Academy of Math and Science in Worcester is offering three Professional Learning Community workshops for middle and high school teachers. A two-part workshop, "Writing for Science Fairs and Student Research", on October 17 and November 7, will focus on effective strategies for writing research papers, designing presentation boards, and publishing student work. Participants can receive 6 PDPs. Two more workshops, "Building and Sustaining a PLC Community in Science" and "Science Writing Basic for the Common Core," will be held on October 19 and November 2. Transitioning to New State Standards and Systems: Collaborating for College Readiness
Taunton Holiday Inn, Taunton
October 25, 9AM-3PM

High School and District curriculum directors, teachers, department chairs, superintendents, principals, vice principals, and guidance counselors are invited to join college instructors and administrators focusing on the first-year experience and developmental education to discuss the impact of the New State Standards and Assessment System on classroom pedagogy and college readiness.
