Join Congressman Kennedy and DESE Commissioner Chester to Discuss STEM Workforce and Education Alignment
STEM employment opportunities are not limited to PhDs. There are STEM jobs available to all, from high school graduates to certificate earners to associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree holders. Join leaders from government, industry, and education to discuss and learn about the current state of "middle skills" STEM jobs, the opportunities and needs of STEM employers, and how to best prepare students for college and career readiness. Greater Attleboro Students Enjoy STEM Workshops
Approximately 165 middle school students from the Greater Attleboro area participated in a series of STEM workshops in conjunction with the @scale grant at Bristol Community College's Attleboro Center in late May. Students participated in various hands-on STEM workshops including: STEM Concepts in Everyday Living; Analyzing Owl Pellets; Exploring DNA; Engineering and Wind Power; Computer Forensics; Bug Watch: One Key to Watershed Education. Bristol Community College is looking forward to sponsoring similar workshops in the future.

MLSC Grant Deadlines Approach
The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MSLC) is pleased to announce the High School Equipment and Supplies Grant Program. The program will enable the purchase of equipment and supplies to train students in life sciences technology and research. Eligible high schools, as well as community-based organizations that serve such high schools, can apply for up to $250,000 in grant funding by completing an online application. Eligibility requirements and the online application can be found here. The deadline for this application is October 11, 2013 at noon. If you have questions about the program please email.
The 2013 MSLC Tax Incentive Program is also now open. Applicants are generally companies that have transitioned or are transitioning from pure life sciences R&D to commercialization and manufacturing. Nearly 50 companies have been awarded active tax incentive grants totaling more than $75 million during the past four program years. Registration for the 2013 MA STEM Summit Opens September 25th
On September 25th, the registration link on the Massachusetts STEM Summit website will become active and begin accepting registrations for this year's event. Please check the website often for important updates as planning is in the process of confirming topics, speakers, and resources. This year's registration process includes a $50 fee to help offset the cost of the event and catering expenses.

Massachusetts 8th Graders Rank Second in the World for Science
Eighth grade public school students in Massachusetts ranked second in the world in science, outperforming all except Singapore students, according to the "Trends in International Mathematics and Sciences Study", which surveyed the skills of 600,000 students in 63 nations two years ago. Across the U.S., students scored an average of 525 in science. Commonwealth kids scored 42 points higher. Read the full article here. |
The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) has released two policy documents approved by the PARCC Governing Board in June. The first document is the PARCC Accessibility Features and Accommodations for assessing students with disabilities and English language learners on PARCC. To view the manual and other supporting materials, click here. The second document includes PARCC's performance level descriptors (PLDs). PLDs, synonymous to achievement levels, are the broad, categorical levels used to report student performance on the test. To view the PARCC PLDs, click here.

Engaging Women for STEM, Non-Traditional and Green Careers

This roundtable discussion, sponsored by The U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau and The Construction Institute, will bring together leaders in the Metro Boston area to discuss potential pathways for women to become involved in careers related to STEM, green, and non traditional careers. Some of the questions to be considered are: How can women qualify for STEM, non-traditional, and green careers? What opportunities are available for women in "green" jobs and STEM? How can we help women transition from traditional occupations to non-traditional ones?
