Summer River Exploration Camp

YMCA Camp Massasoit (Mattapoisett), YMCA Camp Frederick Douglass (New Bedford)
Nature-loving youth will get up-close and personal with wildlife in and around Buzzards Bay and the Mattapoisett River: catch blue crabs, net fish, identify plants, wrangle toads, and learn how to help the environment. Seeking Volunteers for STEM GIG in Worcester
The Girl Scouts of Central and Western MA is partnering with Worcester Polytechnic Institute to host STEM GIG (Geek is Glam) on Saturday, Oct. 19 at WPI. The day-long program will expose 300+ girls, grades 4-8, to hands-on workshops, career panel discussions, and an expo. Organizers are currently seeking presenters--STEM professionals who can deliver an interactive workshop, women who are passionate about their chosen STEM fields and want to share in a career panel discussion, and companies that can put on a demonstration of the great work they do. Workshop choices include "Splish, Splash, Buzz: Teaching in the Outdoors" on July 30; "Using Nature to Engage Preschoolers in Authentic STEM and Literacy Experiences" on August 10; "Nature-Inspired Indoor Environments" on Augst 19; and "Moving to Learn" and "Music and Nature" on August 20. MMSI Advanced Placement Summer Institute July 29-August 2, 2013

Teachers can ramp up their STEM content knowlege at the 2013 MMSI APSI, a comprehensive five-day training for AP teachers of Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Physics, and Statistics. Current AP teachers get registration priority. Participants can receive up to 35 Professional Development Points and may also earn three graduate credits through Cambridge College for a fee of $200. There are no fees for MMSI APTAP teachers, including tuition, lunch, materials, and boarding (for teachers outside a 50-mile radius.) Current APTAP teachers register here. For non-APTAP and all other teachers, tuition is $1,000, with an additional $150 fee for meals and overnight accomodations. DIGITS Reaching out to SE MA 6th Graders
DIGITS is a cross-sector STEM education/awareness initiative that partners STEM professsionals with sixth-grade classes across the Commonwealth. STEM professionals recruited by DIGITS presented to more that 2500 sixth-grade students in SE MA last school year, talking about their careers and emphasizing the importance of math and science in today's world. DIGITS STEM volunteers visited Attleboro, Avon, Braintree, Dartmouth, East Taunton, Harwich, Mashpee, Norfolk, Plainville, Sandwich, Sharon, Somerset, West Yarmouth, Weymouth and Wrentham. Businesses and organizations involved included AccuRounds, Akamai, BSC Engineering, EMD Sorono, MA Division of Marine Sciences, Meditech, Nuance, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Waquoit Bay Research Reserve, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Science Camp at Mass Audubon

Campers ages 10-13 can choose the first session, "Hot and Cold Science," and learn the most efficient means of lighting a fire, how animals are adapted to climate, and other temperature-focused themes. Youth ages 11-14 can attend the second session, "Biomimicry Science," to discover the nature behind Velcro, use nature to redesign a product, and learn the survival strategy of natural mimcs. NASA Night Rover Challenge Now Open
Registration is now open for teams to compete in the $1.5 million energy storage competition known as the Night Rover Challenge. Individuals, groups, and companies are invited to compete for a prize purse. Since the program's inception in 2005, NASA has awarded more than $6 million to 15 different teams. The goal of the Challenge is to stimulate innovation in energy storage technologies for extreme space environments, such as the suface of the moon, or for electric vehicles and renewable energy systems here on Earth. Cape Cod Community College's "Summer of Science" program is a hands-on, inquiry-based science and technology experience for students entering grades 6, 7, and 8. Participants will explore electricity and magnetism, computer science, and robotics with a team of highly trained and experienced teachers. They will asssemble "junkbots," build simple circuits, turn a lemon into a battery, work with electronics prototyping software, and more! Get more information and register here.
