STEM Resource Fair for Educators Attracts 300 More than 300 attendees and exhibitors came together at the SE MA STEM Network's first Resource Fair for Educators on May 23, 2013 at Bridgewater State University. Participants attended workshops such as "Using Marine Animal Rehabilitation to Support STEM Goals" and "Sports and Engineering" to walk away with inspiring STEM lessons to incorporate into the classroom. Attendees also learned about STEM resource providers such as the Green Schools Project, National Institutes for Health, and NOVA Education. Resource materials available from the SE MA STEM Network included our Corporate Partners program, our SE MA STEM Directory, how to establish a STEM Education in your community, and our STEM Career Exploration website. Massachusetts' STEM Teacher of the Year Annou nced
The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon announced that Kelly Powers, a computer science teacher and department chair at the Advanced Math and Science Academy in Marlborough, has been named The Hall's Massachusetts STEM Teacher of the Year. Powers is the inaugural winner of the award, which recognizes a MA teacher who is making significant contributions to STEM education. She will receive a $5000 grant for STEM education and will be honored at the 2013 MA STEM Summit and at a pregame ceremony at a 2013 New England Patriots Game. Read more here. |
Internship Challenge Program
The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center's Internship Challenge is a workforce development program focused on enhancing the talent pipeline for Massachusetts companies engaged in life sciences. The program facilitates the placement of students and recent graduates, who are considering career opportunities in the life sciences, in paid internships across the state. Consistent with the Center's role as a catalyst in growing the talent needed by the life sciences industry, the program is designed to provide students and companies with the tools to connect, and the Center will reimburse eligible companies for intern stipends. @Scale RFP Targets Academic Achievement and Educator Effectiveness
The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education and the Governor's STEM Advisory Council announce the final phase of @Scale Initiative Request for Proposals targeting student academic achievement and educator effectiveness with a focus on mathematics, science, or technology/engineering in elementary and middle grade levels and/or student interest and educator effectiveness in pre-K education programs. The RFP commits $250K of state funds targeting $750K in matching, non-state funds to support projects that replicate or scale up successful initiatives to benefit more students. Ocean Explorium Kicks Off Campaign with a Challenge
The Ocean Explorium is kicking off a community-wide fundraising campaign to 'Save Your Ocean Explorium, Build Your Future'. According to Executive Director Abbey Spargo, "An anonymous donor has issued the Ocean Explorium a challenge match of $50,000 if the Ocean Explorium can raise $100,000 by July 1." Ms. Spargo added that "The Ocean Explorium has become a valuable asset for the SouthCoast region, providing educational programs for learners of all ages. We are proud of what we have achieved in the past five years and we intend to build on that foundation. Gifts received before July 1 will count toward the match and bring us closer to our fundraising goal." Click here for additional information. |

STEM Course Available for Middle School Educators Integrating STEM in the Middle Schools
June 13, Aug. 5 - 9, Nov. 12, The Hall at Patriot Place
Expand your own content knowledge and your professional expertise in a supportive, creative team environment. Explore engineering and technology content and how it fits with real-world challenges as well as current, standards-based mathematics and science content. In addition to hands-on, in-depth integrated STEM experiences that are drawn from nationally recognized exemplar materials, the course will include readings and discussions, visits from STEM field experts, and opportunities to look at student work for insights into STEM pedagogical issues. An implementation project in your classroom will also be included so that you can gain supported practice in integrated STEM experiences. MITS Summer Professional Development Institutes for Upper & Middle School Educators
Investigating Interdisciplinary Pathways through Engineering Design and the Natural World

After registering, participants will receive enrollment forms for optional graduate credit which must be completed prior to the first day of the Institute. This hybrid course combines ten hours of online instruction with a one-week, on-site component. Sustainability Summer Camp Offered at UMD
July 15 - 19, 2013, UMASS Dartmouth
The UMASS Dartmouth Center for Sustainability is running its Fifth Annual Sustainability Summer Camp for Middle-school students from July 15th-19th at UMass Dartmouth. Area teachers will lead hands-on sessions in many sustainability areas, including food and renewable energies, under the broad umbrella of the Lorax, or Becoming a Speaker for the Trees. The camp includes field trips to a local beach, Share the Harvest Farm, and conservation areas. Students entering 6-8th grade are encouraged to attend.
