PARCC Performance Level Descriptors Released for Public Comment
Deadline: May 8, 2013
The Partnership for Assesment of Readiness for College and Careers has released for public comment the draft grade- and subject-specific performance level descriptors (PLDS) in English language arts/literacy and Mathematics.  The PLD's specify the knowledge, skills, and practices that students performing at a given level should demonstrate in each content area at each grade level. The MA Department of Higher Education seeks public comment and asks that you particularly review high school English (Grades 9-11) and Math (Algebra I and II and Math I, II, and III). To view the draft PDL's, click here and provide feedback through a survey here. 
 
Series on Curriculum Mapping

May 13-23, 2013, Elementary Sessions 10AM , Secondary Sessions 1PM

The MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has developed a new series on curriculum mapping as a core tool for communicating about and aligning curriculum and instruction across grades, subject areas, and schools.  A set of May webinars will focus on mapping the content-area standards in ELA, Math, and History/Social Science. The webinars include History/ Social Science (May 13), English Language Arts/ Literacy (May 21),  and Mathematics (May 29). 
  
MA Clean Energy Center Summer Internship Program

The MassCEC is seeking undergraduate and graduate students for its 2013 Summer Internship Program.  The program facilitates the placement of college students and recent college graduates who are considering career opportunities in the clean energy industry through paid internships across the Commonwealth.  MassCEC will reimburse eligible companies for intern stipends.  For more information click here or contact Arthur Natella.

Summer at Cohasset Center for Student Coastal Research
CSCR is busy planning a summer full of hands-on environmental programs, research and non-profit management opportunities for local high-school students from Cohasset, Scituate and surrounding towns. Programs for summer 2013 include Wetland Monitoring, Sea Perch Robotics, Local Water Quality Testing. CCSCR is also offering a Certificate of Environmental Stewardship that offers students an opportunity to stand out from the crowd when applying for colleges and for jobs. Mathematics Education Ph.D. from UMass Dartmouth
 
UMD's STEM education department is offering a research-focused Ph.D. program aimed at producing the best educational researchers and teachers in mathematics education from all grades K-20+. The program develops understanding of learning theories and current research in mathematics education that can enhance pedagogical awareness and improve practice in education. 2013 Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair

Ocean Explorium Recieves Special NASA Technology
 
The Ocean Explorium was one of only four locations in the nation selected to recieve an exclusive program update for its Science on a Sphere exhibit.  NASA Earth Observatory is a teaching tool that permits Ocean Explorium education staff to display fixed images from NASA's vast collection and overlay them with graphs and other visualizations of data analysis. The new resource is already being integrated into field trip curricula and public programs. Mushroom Culture Workshop & Forestry Stewardship Place TBA, Dartmouth

Cultivated mushrooms are bringing in $11-$15 /lb. at farmers' markets, and in

this unique opportunity for farmland and forestland owners, participants will take home a log they have learned how to inoculate with shitake spawn that has the ability to produce for 5 years.  Registration is $20 per person and includes lunch. For more information contact Sue Guiducci .

New Out-of-School Time Online Science Module
 
Through NASA funding, Wheelock college Aspire Institute will be rolling out an impactful two-week online module in Science Inquiry for Out of School Time Professionals. Branching off of the succesful launch of the online STEM education courses for elementary teachers, this new program will further empower educators to teach science effectively both in and out of school.  For more information about the OST program contact Barbara Joseph at bjoseph@wheelock.edu.
 
Afterschool STEM Impact Award

Application Deadline: May 15, 2013

The After School Alliance is teaming up with the Noyce Foundation to recognize exemplary afterschool STEM programs serving students grades 4-8. Winners and other notable applicants will be highlighted as model programs. In addition, two grand prize winners will recieve the $10,000 afterschool impact award. Advanced Manufacturing Workshop

NEBHE's Advanced Manufacturing Problem Based Learning (AM PBL) project is hosting a workshop for secondary and postsecondary STEM instructors and administrators at the EASTEC Eastern States Exposition. Participants will use authentic web-based multimedia case studies to enhance students' content knowledge, critical thinking, and ability to work in teams. Noyce Summer Institute and 2013-14 Scholarship
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
 
Qualified Umass Dartmouth sophmores and juniors majoring in STEM fields may attend the NSF Noyce Summer Institute. This eight-week program is for those  interested in becoming math and science teachers in high demand, urban middle and high schools. In addition, scholarships are available for the 2013-14 academic year. Undergraduate Noyce Scholars receive a $10,000 scholarship during their senior year and a second $19,000 when they enroll in the teacher initial licensure program. All Noyce Scholars must commit to teaching in a high-need school for two years for each year of scholarship recieved. Learn more about the Noyce program at UMD.
 
Simple Machines Workshops
Upper Cape Tech, Bourne

Jr. Tech is offering a workshop for students in grades 4-6 to experience the mechanical and structural principles of simple machines and structures through the construction of LEGO models. Participants will learn about gear, lever, pulley, force & motion, measurement, and energy, all while completing challenges. The cost is $100, with a maximum enrollment of 14 students.
