STEM Entrepreneurship Speaking Series: Sharks!
Cape Cod Community College

World renowned marine biologist, author, and shark specialist Dr. Gregory Skomal's study of sharks has spanned habitats from the Arctic Circle to coral reefs in the tropical Central Pacific. In recent years, he has studied sharks off the coast of Cape Cod and is noted for tracking stress levels of the Great White in 2012. Free and open to the public. For more information click

The CONNECT Colleges Bring More Kids a "Summer of Science"
Over a thousand of the region's school children will engage in enriching science and technology programs this summer, thanks to the public colleges and universities of SE Massachusetts.
Children can learn what it's like to pilot airplanes at Bridgewater State University's ACE aviation camp in New Bedford, or explore robitcs and game design at Bristol Community College's Kids College.
Forensics and crime solving are at the center of Massasoit Community College's "Special Study of Biology." Cape Cod youth are invited to join the "maker movement" to assemble junkbots, build simple circuts, and create batteries out of lemons. Environmental Science is the focus of Umass Dartmouth's "Earth Keepers" Program.

STEP to Success Conference in STEM

Cambridge Science Festival

The Cambridge Science Festival, the first of its kind in the U.S, is a celebration showcasing the leading edge in STEM. A multifaceted, multicultural event, the festival makes science accessible, interactive and fun. On the very first night participants can join in "Yuri's Night" with student astronomers as they watch the night sky from the observation deck of Harvard University in celebration of some of the most important space launches in NASA's history. Exploration Camp
Ocean Explorium, New Bedford

April 15-19, 2013, 9AM-4PM
In a week of marine discovery this program will include hands-on activities, Science on a Sphere presentations, and live-animal demonstrations for campers ages 6-12. On Wednesday, campers will enjoy a boat trip with the ZEPHYR Marine Education Foundation, participating in on-water field activities and assisting in marine animal collection and examination. The camp cost is $150 for the week (Monday-Friday) or $40 per day, two day minimum. Click here for more information and to register.

Girls STEM Summit
Massachusetts Maratime Academy, Buzzards Bay

This event, sponsored by Jr. Tech, will bring together 100 female students in grades 8-12 who have expressed a stong interest in pursuing higher education careers in STEM. Participants will join female STEM career professionals and educators for a full-day program that features emerging STEM careers with hands-on workshops taught by female role models. Jr. Tech ROV Workshop
Massachusetts Maritime Academy
April 15-19, 2013, 9AM-4PM
Remote O perated Vehicles (ROV) are becoming a critically important technology for undersea exploration and research. In this hands-on program, participants from grades 5-8 will work in teams to engineer, build, test, and enter the ROV driving challenges. They will also work with the latest mobile technology apps to record their work and communicate their findings. The cost is $200. For more information and to register click here.

Teacher Training Workshop: A Whale of a Mystery

April 16, 2013, 11AM-3PM Join us for this free, hands-on workshop in which attendees will become familiar with the basic concepts and biology that underlie the Whale of a Mystery curriculum. Participants will practice some basic laboratory skills used in modern biology and biomedicine, and gain insight into this exciting inquiry based curriculum for the middle school classroom. 2013 Marine Art Contest for K-12 Students
Applications Due: April 25, 2013
This contest is open and free to all students from public, private, and home schools. This year's theme is "Amazing Ocean Creatures of Stellwagen National Marine Sanctuary". There are five divisions in the contest-- grades K-4, grades 5-8, grades 9-12, an open scientific division (K-12), and an open computer graphics division (K-12) with a winner, second and third place selected from each division. Winning entries will be posted on the Stellwagen website, will become a part of a traveling art show, and may be used by the sanctuary and their sponsors in their outreach programs. Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

PLTW Information Session
Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School, South Easton
May 1, 2013, 3-4PM Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curricula are collaboratively designed by K-12 teachers, universty educators, engineering and biomedical professionals, and school administrators to promote critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and real-world problem solving skills in students. The hands on, project-based programs engage students on multiple levels, expose them to areas of study that they typically do not encounter, and provide them with a foundation and proven path to college and career success. PLTW currently provides progams for grades 6-12; an elementary program will be released in 2014. This information session will feature students and teachers involved with the PLTW engineering and biomedical science progams who will be available to discuss their projects.
