Register for Fall STEM Meetings!
Are you looking to develop your school or community's STEM plan--connect with colleagues--learn about model programs--and find resources to build your district's STEM activities? Then our Fall Network meetings are for you! On Nov.1 at Cape Cod Community College, you can hear from Dennis Yarmouth about their STEM Academy, from Barnstable on their High School STEM Initiatives, and from Sandwich regarding their STEM Model. You will also meet exhibitors including AAUW, Amgen-Bruce Wallace, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Jr. Tech, Thornton Burgess Society, and Zephyr Education Foundation. Resources from the SE MA STEM Network to be highlighted include our NEW Corporate Partner program, STEM Directory, Career Exploration website, and technical assistance.
Presenters and exibitors will differ, but the program will be similar at all four meetings--attend the one that is most convenient. Click on the links below to register:

 Manufacturing Alive and Well in Massachusetts
On September 13, 2012, Gov. Deval Patrick and Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray visited AccuRounds in Avon to release a new study. The report, "Staying Power II," states that "manufacturing in Massachusetts has survived the Great Recession and, if anything, appears to be in a better position today than in 2007 to prosper into the future." The report projects that there will be 100,000 job openings in the sector over the next decade. AccuRounds, a precision manufacturing firm, is owned by Michael Tamasi, a leading industry voice involved in efforts to sustain and grow manufacturing in Massachusetts. Advanced Manufacturing: Amp It Up! MassDevelopment is now accepting applications for matching grants from organizations that will create innovative programs to educate students and the adults in their lives about career options in advanced manufacturing through the new AMP it up! campaign. The goal is to dispel common misconceptions about today's manufacturing and bolster the prospective emloyee base for these quality jobs. Eligible applicants must be Massachusetts-based nonprofit organizations that work with students between the ages of 10 and 19. New England Ocean Literacy Summit
November 1-2, 2012
University of Rhode Island, Narragansett Bay Campus
The New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative is hosting its fourth biennial conference with a theme of "the ocean is largely unexplored." Dr. Robert Ballard, National Geographic Explorer in Residence and President of the Institute for Exploration, will speak about ocean exploration on Nov. 2. There will be 15 concurrent sessions and a plenary panel discussing "Why should we explore the ocean?" moderated by The World's Ari Daniel Shapiro. Register Now for Verizon Foundation App Challenge
The Verizon Foundation is challenging students to come up with an app that addresses a real problem in their school or community. Working with a faculty advisor, students in middle and high schools form teams of 5-10 students to develop an original concept for a mobile app. The teams will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of STEM educators and corporate innovators. Each of the winning schools will receive a Samsung Galaxy Tab. Teams can submit their entries from Dec. 1 through Jan 18. Go to the AppChallenge website to learn more. |

The American Civil War: Roots of Modern Technology

Westport High Students "Adopt a Watershed"
High School students in Dan Harrington's Environmental Science class spent this fall in the field exploring the Angeline and Kirby Brooks in Westport. The students collected data on water chemistry, recorded physical characteristics of the streams, and sampled aquatic life in order to measure water quality. The project was part of the Adopt-A-Watershed Program sponsored by the Westport River Watershed Alliance. A Sea Change -- Film Screening

This film follows the journey of retired history teacher Sven Huseby on his quest to learn about the rising acidity of the oceans and what this "sea change" bodes for mankind. His journey takes him to Alaska, California, Washington, and Norway to speak with oceanographers, marine biologists, climatologists, and artists. Sven discovers that global warming is only half the story of the environmental catastrophe that awaits us. |
Entrepreneurship for the Environment

Alexandra Adler, Northeast Regional Director, will introduce Cleantech Open. Fueled by a network of more than 2,000 volunteers, Cleantech Open unites the public and private sectors in a shared vision for making America's cleantech sector a thriving economic engine. Register Now for 2012-13 Real World Design Challenge
The Real World Design Challenge is an annual aviation design competition for teams of three to seven high school students. It is FREE to students and teachers. Teachers/coaches receive access to professional engineering software and students gain access to mentors from industry, government, and universities. The Massachusetts State Champion team will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, DC to compete at the National Challenge.
