From the Head of SCHOOL
Modeling Behavior
Dear Families,
I like Facebook: it's magical, especially when it comes to finding a childhood friend or a high school classmate. Almost every day I spend some time on Facebook, either before or after school. I like to keep up with my friends in Senegal, England, France, Oregon, Missouri, and around the world. I know many of you also enjoy that website. Facebook and other forms of social media can be excellent forms of communication. This past week, however, some Facebook threads about school personnel and practices were confusing and inaccurate. Like the old fashioned "telephone" game, this led to gossip, speculation, and misinformation. When names or titles are used in these posts, relationships and reputations can be damaged. We teach our students to mind what they post online, as it could affect their future. Many high schools, colleges and recruiters now look online before even offering interviews. You can help your child succeed by modeling proper behavior on the Internet. When you have a question about an incident at school, a policy, our curriculum or anything involving our school, please contact the school directly. If it involves your child only, please contact your teacher or the school social worker or nurse. If you have questions about curriculum, please contact your division vice-principals. If your question or
concern does not fit into one of these categories please email me directly. This will ensure that you get the correct information.
On another subject, when your children are late to school, please escort them to the office, not just the door.
Finally -- Thank you for your participation in the Annual Fund! We are 53% toward our goal.
If you have not made your gift -- as I have not -- please do it soon. I typically write a check but you can also make a safe, secure online gift by clicking here.
Enjoy your three-day weekend!

Turn In Your HealtheKids Forms!
Dear Parents, Please look in your child's backpack for the permission forms for the annual HealtheKids screenings. A second distribution of forms will be done in the near future, but if you need a new form, please contact the nurse. We request a response of some kind from every student so we can be sure all our families are aware of this opportunity.
7th and 8th grade students are now eligible to be screened for free as well!
In order for your child to be screened the permission form must have the second page of the packet completed with your student's name, grade, date of birth and your signature, printed name, relationship and date. If you choose to opt-out of this program, please sign the opt-out form that is attached to the permission pack and return it to your child's teacher or the nurse. Some important things to know about this program:
- All screenings are completed by experienced and well trained nurses.
- The results of your child's health screening will be sent home to you at the completion of the building's screenings in a sealed envelope.
- These are comprehensive head-to-toe exams and will include screening your child's hearing and vision, which are not routinely done at a well-child doctor visit.
Please complete this packet as soon as possible and return it to your child's teacher OR the school nurse.

AL MEMBERS In the community
Fill Up The Suitcases Jan. 11-Feb. 5
AL families can help send over the counter medications to a free health clinic in rural Jamaica by filling up the suitcases at both campuses. The suitcase at Cherry is outside the nurse's office and the suitcase at Oak is by the front desk. (Parents need to bring medication into the school but kids can carry band-aids, tooth brushes, school supplies, hand sanitizer, etc.)
Here are some of the items needed:
- Acetaminophen & Ibuprofen tablets
- band aids (the wide ones) - multivitamins - rubbing alcohol - hydrogen peroxide - antibiotic ointments - hydrocortisone & anti fungal creams - latex exam gloves
| - hand sanitizers - elastic bandages - cold and flu tablets - Loratadine (Claritin) or other allergy tablets including chewables for the younger kids - toothpaste and toothbrushes - any school supplies and small toys
|
Also, the school nurses can buy any of the above items at cost. So if want your money to go further, you can write a check to Acadmie Lafayette and turn it in at the front desk. Mark Jamaica in the memo line.
Anything you can do will be greatly appreciated by the students of Oberlin high school and the community in Jamaica. -- Ella and Jack Perry
