From the Head of SCHOOL

New Year, New Resolutions

Dear Families,

Welcome back! I hope you had a good break and I extend my sincere best wishes for a wonderful New Year.

I know many people make resolutions for the New Year. You may be one of them. One resolution I hope we all make is to be on time for school. If your student is late, however, please escort them into the building.

Thank you to everyone who came to the PTSO meeting this week to learn about the travel opportunities provided to students at Acadmie Lafayette and the new finger scanning process that will be implemented in February. A detailed email was sent to all families about the finger scanning process on December 14, 2015. If you did not receive it you can access it HERE. You can also read the attachment and the letter from Doc Sade. All families will receive an email with the dates we will be scanning students as well as an opportunity to opt out of the program.

If you have any questions please contact Peggy Arians ([email protected]) or Jacque Lane ([email protected]).

Bonne Anne!

From the CHERRY PRINCIPAL

Welcome Back To Cherry!

Dear families,

Over the break, I went with my family to France. At the end of the week, my son commented that he learned more in that one week than in an entire semester of high school French. I won't comment about how many traditional secondary schools teach foreign language--but I will reflect on what a fantastic opportunity our students do have. They are learning another language in a natural, authentic way. Their accents are great, and even our youngest students are beginning to produce the language spontaneously.  They actually communicate in French--which is of course the goal of learning another language. I am thankful to work at A.L. and thankful that you have chosen to give your children the gift of another language.

Bonne Anne!

K-3 Principal

HealtheKids Program Changes

Dear Parents,
Please look in your child's backpack for the permission forms for the annual HealtheKids screenings. A second distribution of forms will be done in the near future, but if you need a new form, please contact the nurse. We request a response of some kind from every student so we can be sure all our families are aware of this opportunity.

7th and 8th grade students are now eligible to be screened for free as well!

In order for your child to be screened the permission form must have the second page of the packet completed with your student's name, grade, date of birth and your signature, printed name, relationship and date. If you choose to opt-out of this program, please sign the opt-out form that is attached to the permission pack and return it to your child's teacher or the nurse.

Some important things to know about this program:
  • All screenings are completed by experienced and well trained nurses.
  • The results of your child's health screening will be sent home to you at the completion of the building's screenings in a sealed envelope.
  • These are comprehensive head-to-toe exams and will include screening your child's hearing and vision, which are not routinely done at a well-child doctor visit.
Please complete this packet as soon as possible and return it to your child's teacher OR the school nurse.

Medicine For Jamaica

Hello my name is Ella,

Many years ago our grandfather, Forrest Haggard, and his good friend, Richmond, formed a partnership to help those in need in Jamaica.

Ella and Jack Perry with the nurse at the clinic.
One of the things they did was start a free health clinic at Oberlin High School in rural Jamaica. Unfortunately, there was not a regular supply of medicine to the clinic and now the students have to pay for the supplies.

We learned this two years ago when we visited the clinic with our mom and I noticed a girl who came in and had to pay for the Tylenol that the nurse gave her. I asked my mom why she had
to pay because I thought it was a free clinic.

I wanted to do something. When I told Nurse Mary about the situation, she contacted the school nurse in Jamaica and asked them what they needed. So last year our friends at Acadmie Lafayette helped us by donating medicines and money. As you can see our collection filled the shelves!

We are doing the collection again this year.  Here are some of the needed items we will collect:

Acetaminophen & Ibuprofen tablets
- band aids (the wide ones)
- multivitamins
- rubbing alcohol
- hydrogen peroxide
- antibiotic ointments
- hydrocortisone & anti fungal creams
- latex exam gloves
- hand sanitizers
- elastic bandages
- cold and flu tablets
- Loratadine (Claritin) or other allergy tablets including chewables for the younger kids
- toothpaste and toothbrushes
- any school supplies and small toys

Also, the school nurses can buy any of the above items at cost. So if want your money to go further, you can write a check to Acadmie Lafayette.

We will have collection suitcases near the nurse's office at both campuses January 11- February 5. Please be aware that children cannot bring medication to school, so parents will need to bring any of those items directly to the nurse. Anything you can do will be greatly appreciated by the students of Oberlin high school and the community in Jamaica.

Thank you,
                           Ella & Jack Perry
