Remembering Fallen Heros

Dear Families and Friends,

On Wednesday our 8th graders decorated the graves of 45 African American servicemen at the Highland Cemetery. This was their second visit to the cemetery. In March they went and took lawnmowers, clippers and trash bags to clean up the cemetery that had been neglected for years. This story was covered extensively by the Kansas City news media including the Kansas City Star, WDAF TV, and The MidtownPost. Please click on these links to read more about this interesting and worthwhile project:  MidtownPost, Kansas City Star, and WDAF-TV.  There are great pictures of our students.Highland Cemetery

Special thanks to Muriel Desbleds and Jessica McDowell for organizing this project and integrating it into the curriculum. Kudos to the students who spent so much time scrubbing tombstones, cutting weeds and decorating the graves with American flags.

As always, activities like these make me proud to be associated with such a fine school where our faculty and students take community service very seriously.

Bon weekend!

Growth Changes

As we prepare for next year, our larger building, and more students (and a lot more cars) - we have developed a new dismissal procedure. It will be implemented this summer and will continue during the regular school year at Cherry. Detailed information is going home with the summer school mailing, but I would like to share some of the specifics.

1. The new procedure was developed with a team of teachers, parents, KCPD officers and a traffic engineer. The main goals for all of us are student safety and efficiency.
2. The biggest difference from the current procedure is the way we will handle parent pick up. Parents will no longer need to come into the building to check students out in classrooms - they will remain in their cars.
3. After the bus riders and YMCA students are dismissed, the car riders will go to the playground with their teachers. The car rider line will start on Kenwood and wrap around the building to Cherry (as needed). Families need to display their car rider sign in the car so that children will be called and loaded quickly.
4. Car rider signs are being mailed with summer school information, kids will bring one home in backpacks, and another set will be given in August. We are happy to provide additional signs for a grandparent or a carpool.

We will share this information with incoming Kindergarten parents at their orientation night on June 8 @ 6:30pm. Later that same evening, we will share this dismissal plan with parents of children entering 1st-3rd grade. Those parents are invited to meet at 7:30 pm in the Cherry gym.
Thank you so much for your support as we grow!

Madame Heather

Important Medication Information

Dear parents: you should have received a letter in your students' backpacks by now, titled Important Medication Information. This flyer reminded you to please pick up your child's medications form the nurses offices. Anything left by June 3rd will be disposed of.

A medication order form must be completely filled out for any routine medications given at school for the 2015-16 school year, including summer school 2015. It must include a signature by the parent and doctor. A pharmacy prescription label on the medication or its box will suffice as a doctor's signature.

Any students attending summer school will need to have updated medication orders from their doctor as well as bring in those medications to the nurses' offices. Medication orders received during summer school will remain in effect throughout the 2015-16 school year. Remember that medication orders must be updated each school year.

Along with the medication order form, if your child has a severe allergy (food or otherwise), asthma, or any condition requiring an action plan, your child's doctor must complete and sign an  action plan for the nurse and staff to follow. Action plan forms can be obtained from your doctor or you may download blank asthma and allergy plans from the Nurse tab on the Académie Lafayette website.

Thank you for another successful year, and we hope your summer is healthy and fun!
