Le Journal

A Message from our cherry Street principal

Cherry Update

Earlier this week, a student came in to the building first thing, asking to see the principal.  When Madame Beth asked why,  the student said, "I have something up my nose."  So, like in previous years -  I'm starting to have a bit of an identity crisis.  Kindergarten students clearly do not understand the role of the principal.  :) I remember last year, when asked what the principal does, one student replied "gets kids in trouble" and another students said "fires people."  Actually, very little of my time is spent with kids in trouble or firing people (or getting things out of noses). It's not that we have perfect students or perfect teachers, but one thing that is clear is that we are a team, a community. Thank you for sharing your kids with us and for being a part of a great team at Acadmie Lafayette.

Bon weekend!
Madame Heather

Groundbreaking at Cherry

Acadmie Lafayette broke ground on the 6-classroom wing at the Cherry campus today. The 7,150 square foot addition will serve 115 K-3 students.  The wing was designed by BNIM Architects and will be built by Diggs Construction., LLC.
More than 100 guests enjoyed the Acadmie Lafayette singers, listened to stories from graduates of Acadmie Lafayette, cut the ribbons surrounding the playground and celebrated when a huge backhoe broke ground in the asphalt.  The Board of Directors and others put on hard hats and joined in the ceremonial "turning of the dirt".  WDAF-TV (Ch 4), KHSB-TV (Ch 41), the Kansas City Star and the Midtown Post covered the event.
There will be more details about the event in a special Le Journal next week!

New Mural Delivered to Cherry

The Cherry campus has new artwork to display! We thank the artist, Judith Paulette,  grandparent to Hannah (grade 8), Graison (grade 4), and Hudson (grade 2), for her generous gift of a mural. The mural depicts a streetscape scene in Saint-Michel, France, and is full of detail that viewers will delight in discovering.

Ms. Paulette is a Kansas City artist who has a background in French. Her undergraduate language studies included a summer at La Sorbonne in Paris, France where her studies included literature, and art/architectural history.

The painting will soon find its home on the main floor near the auditorium. We welcome visitors to view it when they are at Cherry!

EpiPen Information

For children having severe allergies, it can get quite expensive providing an EpiPen 2-pack to the school nurse, the after-school care, and any other program your child is involved in.  The school nurse does require a 2-pack to be kept at school.
This coupon provides up to three EpiPen 2-packs per prescription. The coupon can be used an unlimited number of times until the current offer expires 12/31/2014.

For children with asthma, try asking your asthma doctor for free samples to leave with the school or after-school programs. Or look up the website for the manufacturer (ex.ProAir or Ventolin) as they offer discount coupons.

Cold Weather and Uniform Policy

Please remember that uniforms are to be worn each day unless it is casual day or spirit day. Now that the cool weather is upon us, students who are wearing jackets and sweaters during the school day need to make sure they are school colors and do not have writing or emblems, unless they are Acadmie Lafayette sweatshirts.

All girls' shorts, skorts and skirts should be no more than four inches above the knee, as per our uniform policy. We have seen some inappropriate dress and students will be sent to the uniform closet to find clothing that fits properly, or parents will be asked to bring other clothing for their child. Rules to length of skirt, shorts or skorts apply to clothing worn on casual days, as well. Also, bare mid-drift, tank or halter type dresses or shirts or saggy pants are not acceptable.

Parents, help us in ensuring that all students are appropriately dressed and fashion malfunctions do not occur. Merci!

Ties Needed for Cherry Art Class

The Cherry Art Teacher (Mme Talley) is asking for old neck ties.  Any long ties would be great to help with a weaving lesson.  Please leave them at the front desk with Mme LaWanda and let her know it's for art class.  Thanks so much for your help in inspiring our students.

BOO Bayou!

It's almost that time of year again. BOO Bayou is our school's annual fall party. This year it will be on Saturday, October 18th from 6-9 p.m.

We will, as always, be holding a Staff vs. Parents and Students Soccer game. It will be before the party at 4:30 p.m. We are looking for a game coordinator; please contact Mr. Djiba at edjiba@academielafayette.org to volunteer. The coordinator keeps track of who is playing, the referees and keeps the time for the game.

We will have great food from the JAZZ restaurant/bar, bounce houses, music, crafts, and a costume contest. We will also have the 6th grade Haunted Hall! (Please, 6th grade parents call us soon to get planning.) It will be great fun for all. Mark you calenders. We hope to see you there! OH!!! Did I mention that you can follow our updates on Facebook? Our BOO Bayou page link is listed here->
