A Message from our cherry Street principal

Cherry Update

This week is all about safety!
Parents, please practice with your children so they know their vital information-  first name, last name, parents' names (not "mommy" and "daddy") and phone number.  Last week, there was a crying kindergartener by the bus.  He wasn't sure of his bus number, and when he gave the bus driver his middle name only,  the driver could not find him on her list.  The situation ended well, but it serves as a reminder that is so important for school age children to be able to give their legal first and last names to an adult (teacher, police officer, nurse etc.) in case they need help.

Also, please be sure to walk your child into the building if you arrive late.  We close the doors on Cherry and Kenwood at 8:15 a.m. when school officially starts.  Any child arriving after that needs to come in with a parent through the front doors to be signed in.

Have a great weekend!
Madame Heather

Cherry Street Groundbreaking

Celebrating our past, present and future is the theme for the September 19 Groundbreaking!  We will hear from AL Alumni who have finished college and are now working in the city, celebrate the new playground with a massive ribbon cutting, and then break ground for the new wing. Jason Klumb, the Regional Administrator of The Heartland Region of the U.S. General Services Administration and AL parent, will share his thoughts about why good public education makes a great city.
(Special note -- if you were one of the many parents who helped design, build, and paint the Cherry playground and you would like to participate in the ribbon cutting, please plan to sit in the specially marked area.  And BYOS -- bring your own scissors!)

Notes from the nurse

Health Alert: Enterovirus 68 in KC

Parents, we want to make you aware of a current viral outbreak in Kansas City. This illness is causing an unusually high census at Children's Mercy Hospital. According to news reports*, more than 300 cases have been seen in recent days. They are hospitalizing 20-30 of those cases each day. Pediatrician's offices are also reporting seeing higher numbers.

This virus can cause a cold in some children, but can become much more serious in others, causing difficulty in breathing. A fever may or may not be present.

According to Carol Saunders, Ph.D. of Children's Mercy, children who are affected more severely by the virus experience respiratory distress. They may or may not wheeze, and some respond well to asthma medication. Keep in mind that not all children who are severely affected have a history of asthma.

The nurses offices at both AL campuses have seen high numbers of children with cold-like symptoms. Please encourage good hand washing throughout their day, remind them to cover their cough, and keep your child home if they have any symptoms.

Meet our new staff

Amanda Lyons

Where are you from? Originally from Michigan, I've lived in KC over 13 years.

What's your favorite food? I could eat pasta almost every day, but I love steak and potatoes on occasion.

What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time I enjoy DIY, upcycling, and sewing when I'm not hanging out with my family.

What's your favorite thing about living in Kansas City? I love the arts and the beautiful scenery, both in the city and on the outskirts.

Although I'm new to AL, I'm not new to teaching. I've been teaching over 10 years and I love it!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T is Going on at Cherry!

The month of September, Mme. Beth is visiting the classrooms to talk about RESPECT - the first of our seven character education traits for this school year.

We are defining RESPECT as: treating others the way you want to be treated.

We are having discussions about showing respect to: 1) People - including respecting yourself, 2) Places (home, school, park, restaurants, stores, etc.) and 3) Things (animals, nature, earth, supplies, clothes, etc.). We are participating in activities that help us to practice what RESPECT looks like, sounds like and feels like. At the end of September, we will be handing out RESPECT awards to two students in each classroom - for demonstrating this skill.

Home is the first place most children learn about RESPECT. It is a skill that they are not born with, so it has to be taught. Since you are your child's first teacher, here are some things you can do to help promote RESPECT:

1)    Model Respect - children are master observers! They will take their cues from you. If you want them to do it, you have to do it too.

2)    Discuss It - point out when you see others being respectful or disrespectful. Talk about the situation and the feeling involved.

3)    Teachable Moments - ask them "are you being respectful right now?" or "are you treating others the way you want to be treated?"

4)    Notice their respectful behavior and acknowledge it . They are more likely to repeat the positive behavior if they got a positive response or if it felt good.

Ask your children what they are learning about RESPECT!

Congratulations Ryder Clay!

Ryder Clay, 2nd grader at Acadmie Lafayette, will be honored with the 2014 Young Philanthropist of the Year Award on Wednesday, November 19th. Ryder was nominated for his volunteering efforts with the Ronald McDonald House and initiating a school-wide community service project at Cherry, in which the students collected pop tabs and old keys to be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.  The award is presented to Ryder on behalf of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Mid America Chapter.

Ryder helped to educate the students at Cherry about the services that the Ronald McDonald House provides in our area. You can find out more at: www.rmhckc.org/

Last year the students filled up one box of tabs and old keys - this year our goal is to fill up 2 boxes! Please join in our efforts to teach the students about philanthropy, citizenship and recycling. A donation box is placed outside of Mme. Beth's office in the main hallway. Students are able to drop off tabs and keys at anytime!

Summer Camp 2014 was a Sizzling Success!

This past summer, the students participated in a weekly cooking class, taught by our talented Marilyn Hynes.  The hallways were filled with delicious smells as the students made egg rolls, quesadillas, vegetable curry and of course, crepes!  The cooking class was a huge success and we are already simmering some new ideas for next summer.

Students can recreate the recipes they had in summer camp in the attached cookbook. Download here!

Raffle Update: A Life-Changing Ticket

Stephanie McGinnis remembers the day in 2011 when one of her co-workers introduced her to Isabella Baez, her niece.  Isabella was selling raffle tickets for her school - Acadmie Lafayette.

Stephanie bought one, and completely forgot all about it.  Until the day she received a phone call telling her that had had won the $10,000 prize.

"I was in shock", she said,  "I thought it was a joke - but it wasn't."

Stephanie says the raffle prize was life changing.  First, she was able to give money to some of her family members who were struggling. Next, she was able to take a trip to Arizona to see her father.

"That trip was special - I had never been there before," she said,  "But I will never forget sharing this prize with my family.  That brought a warmth to my heart I have never forgotten."

Stephanie says that Acadmie Lafayette students can change someone's life by selling him or her a raffle ticket - just like it did hers.

In other raffle news . . .the Early Bird deadline is Monday, September 15.  To qualify for the Early Bird T-shirt and the drawing for the Great Wolf Lodge or World's of Fun/Oceans of Fun prize your student must turn in at least 20 ticket stubs and the money from those sales by September 15.

Remember - selling tickets with others is FUN.

"The girls and I had a successful time at Price Chopper on August 30th from noon to 2pm. We sold 40 tickets during our time. The patrons and workers at Price Chopper were so generous and supportive." -- Charlette Lyman

"It was our pleasure to sell raffle tickets this past Saturday, September 6, at One More Cup.

Vladimir Crouch and Lauryn Yarnevich

My son is very excited to help the school as much as he can. Vladimir and I had a very nice first-experience selling the tickets with another family. The kids did a wonderful job!" --   Elena Crouch
