A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear AL Community,
Out With the Old, In With the New As of this week, I am happy to say that I am now a true Missourian. I have switched my Oregon license plates to Missouri plates, I have a new Missouri drivers license, and I have purchased a home in Kansas City. And, in true Kansas City fashion I'll say, "Go Royals!"
Evening in Paris Wrap Up
Wow! What an amazing event we had last week. Thank you again to the committee and everyone involved in An Evening in Paris. We can't wait for next year!
Important Info on 3rd Language Choice During the next school year, AL will offer 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students a third language. Students will have the choice between Spanish and Mandarin. To help plan for recruitment of teachers, a language choice form is being sent home today. Please understand that changes will not be allowed after May 1st. If there is not enough interest in one of the languages, we will offer one language only. Forms must be turned in by Friday, April 18th.
Merci beaucoup de votre soutien!
Elimane Mbengue, Head of School

Time to Enroll: Le Monde des STEAM
Sign-up for the weeks you want to attend now!
It's going to be a great summer at Acadmie Lafayette! Enrollment is happening now, and must be completed by April 30, 2014.
This year's summer camp will take students, incoming Kindergarteners up to next year's 8th graders, on an exploration of the world of STEAM. Each week, students will study different aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering Arts and Math). Along with the academic experiences, students will enjoy regular enrichment classes, special guest appearances and fun field trips. In an effort to maintain a balanced budget for the summer program, we ask that parents sign-up their children for only the weeks that the students can attend all the days. This will allow us to provide a better program based on firm attendance numbers rather than trying to predict the attendance as we have done in the past. We are going paperless this summer, so use CLICK HERE to sign up online.

Seeking Intern Host Families for 2014-15
We are looking for host families for our interns next year! Our interns spend the year working in Kindergarten classrooms and living with host families in Kansas City. Families provide the intern a private room, shared bathroom, meals when you are together as a family. It's a great way for your children to practice their French at home! Contact Diane Balagna for more information at [email protected].

2nd Grade: Le Petit Monde de Charlotte and Chicks!
Mme Marchand's class has been studying Le petit monde de Charlotte (Charlotte's Web) during the last few weeks. Students were asked to describe their farm as if they were living on Wilbur's farm. Here is Sammy Bennett's description of his farm:
Sur ma ferme je peux voir une grange, du bl et du foin. Je peux sentir du fumier, les cochons et les chevaux bruns. Le matin j'entend des oies, des souris et des canards. Je peux toucher de la boue, les vaches et les chiens noirs. Quand je touche les chiens, ils sont doux. J'aime go ter des citrouilles, des carottes et des radis. Les poussins sont l! The second graders are happy to announce that they are proud parents of chicks! Students have been studying different life cycles and this month it was life cycle of chicken. The eggs came last Friday and they hatched over the weekend. What a surprise it was Monday to see all those fluffy chicks in the incubator. Sadly we had to say goodbye of a couple of chicks who were not strong enough...it was a life learning experience. The chicks will return to the farm at the end of this week.

April 1 - Poisson d'Avril Brings Hijinks!
Did you know...
April Fools' Day is observed throughout the Western world. Practices include sending someone on a "fool's errand," looking for things that don't exist, playing pranks, and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things.
The French call April 1 Poisson d'Avril, or "April Fish." French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying "Poisson d'Avril" when the prank is discovered.
Mr. Jone's 3rd grade class successfully passed their "Flood Drill" on Tuesday! Mr. Jones told his class that since their classroom is located on the first floor, they had to complete an additional drill in the spring. The students gamely put straws in their mouths (so they could breathe in case of rising waters), stood on their desks and treaded water. Madame Cook, head of the safety committee, was on hand to time the students during the drill. We hope you all had a merry day on Poisson d'Avril!
Clockwise from above: Madame Royce displays the many poissons; 3rd grade students treading water while carrying out the Flood Drill, Mr. Jones explaining the Flood Drill.
