The Science Lesson: Are they smarter than us?

While visiting the 5th grade class last week, Dae, one the students, took a flower from a pot and handed it to me as I was about to leave. I was all the more surprised by that kind gesture as it was not St. Valentine yet. Little did I know that I would also receive a wonderful science lesson on the difference between a plant and animal cells. Iris and Dae offered to share with me their project, explaining the different parts and roles of a cell. They went into detail while explaining the difference between animal and plant cells. I was extremely impressed by their knowledge of this complex subject. Then I remembered a grandparent telling me last year how surprised he was that his grandson was doing a robotic programming project that was similar to what he did in college few decades ago.

Kids today have so many opportunities and resources to be able explore, analyze, collaborate, and make decisions. As educators and parents, part of our job is to be facilitators of learning, guides on the side - not sages in the center - in order to promote active and engaged learning.

Vive the Rock: joining business with pleasure

Last Saturday provided a unique opportunity for me to attend a rock concert put on by our talented parents! It was amazing to see and hear the variety of music and the high quality of the bands. I purchased raffle tickets and was the lucky winner of a basket of coffee, a t-shirt and a CD from one of the bands! What's more, this was a fundraiser for the school! Thanks to Leigh Blumenthal for overseeing this event and for the gift of $3,800 to the Annual Fund.
VIVE THE ROCK!!!!

March 1 is Now a School Day

We are making up the snow day from earlier in the year by making Friday, March 1st a school day (originally planned as a conference day). This means we will not extend the school year into June. Conferences will be held in the evenings, watch for more information from your child's teacher.

Happy St. Valentine's Day to you all!

Le Club de Cuisine

Last month's class on fresh salads and dressings was so much fun!  The fresh herbs and smiling faces really lit up the kitchen classroom.  Join us in March for the next session of this family-friendly cooking series, led by Chef Trina Kahl.  We will get together on Wed., March 13, at the Cherry Street Campus, 6:30 pm.  There are limited spots available, first come, first served.  If you'd like to attend with your kiddos, send an email to Judy Shifrin, [email protected], and indicate names/ages of the children.  As always, we thank the Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri for their help in pulling these off!

Kingergarten Open House: Wed., Feb. 20, 4-6pm

Contact: Katie Hendrickson, [email protected]

We're holding an Open House for those who might not know about our program at Acadmie Lafayette. We encourage all families to reach out to friends, family and neighbors who have Kindergarten-age children and are looking for a program for the fall. This event will be held at Cherry, and is a drop-in, casual event, held on Feb. 20 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Of course, those families who have a sibling entering at the K level in the fall are welcome to come to the open house, as well. If you have a pre-K child, please pick up an application at either campus, OR download the form from our website. Forms MUST be in by March 7th.

Children are eligible if they live within the boundaries of the KCPS district, and they will be five before September 1.

Be prepared to turn in a copy of your child's birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency (in the form of a driver's license, water bill, gas bill or electric bill).

Published Author and AL Parent Supports the Library Do you like to read? Do you like your child to read? We have a way to help you do both!

One of the many talented parents at AL, Matthew Hart, has written and published a fascinating book entitled The Last Iteration of Dexter Maxwell. If you like fiction, this book is a must-read. The characters stick with you weeks after finishing the book, and the plot twists will constantly surprise you.

Matt has generously pledged 5% of book sale proceeds to our two libraries. We hope to use these funds to increase our book selection for students, including Caldecott and Newbury Award winners and non-fiction - in English and French!

Get your copy today! Support Matt and our libraries with one simple purchase. And if you see Matt, give him a pat on the back and a generous "thank you!"
