2013 Marks AUCC 20th Anniversary

Since 1993 the American-Uzbekistan Chamber of Commerce has been at the forefront of advancing trade and business relations between the US and the Republic of Uzbekistan. AUCC prides itself in catering to the needs of our members, providing them with a platform to interact with policy makers in the US and the Republic of Uzbekistan and ensuring that bilateral commercial relations continue to be on the governments' top agenda.   


For the last twenty years AUCC has been a vigorous advocate of the views of the business community to ensure that private sector positions are considered during the development of policies that impact American businesses and the future of U.S.-Uzbekistan relations.

Almalyk Mining and Metallurgy Combine (AGMK) is planning to complete implementation of six projects in 2014, the director-general of the combine Aleksander Farmanov said.

He said that this year, the company will complete six projects. In particular, the company will organize production of equipment for mining works. The electroslag remelting shop is constructed within the project.

Farmanov said that there is no such production in Uzbekistan, so the company purchases mining equipment. After the launch, the company will use own equipment and spare parts, but also sell them to other enterprises of Uzbekistan.

He said that AGMK also constructs a combined cement plant, which will produce white and Portland cement, in Jizzakh region. Turkish company carries out construction of the plant. The part of the plant is build by local specialists. About 60-70% of white cement will be exported as its price is high, Farmanov said.

The combine also constructs new oxygen block to replace old one, which was in use for over 40 years. The combine signed agreement with the US firms to supply equipment. In the first half of 2014, the project will be completed, the head of AGMK said.

Farmanov said that the AGMK implements project on constructionof new sulfuric-acid shop, which will also replace old equipment. It will help to receive additional sulfuric-acid, which is used by Ammofos-Maxam (80% of sulfuric-acid is used by the company), and improve ecology of the region.

He said that the combine is working on construction of underground mine at Kayragach field. It will help to replace retiring capacities and receive additional precious metals. The company continues to reconstruct zinc plant and almost all equipments were received.

Aleksander Farmanov said that implementation of all six projects will help to open new jobs. He added that there are also several projects, which will be realized in 2015-2016.

AGMK chief said that two new objects were constructed in 2013 - Uzun field of Kochbulak mine and a plant on construction of copper pipes of various diameters at the special industrial zone Angren.

The last project helped to start production of copper pipes with diameter from 4.5 to 50 mm. Large part (90-95%) of the products will be exported. This will help receive additional hard currency revenue.

It is worth to mention that the AGMK produce goods for almost 2 trillion soums.

Insurance broker Chartis Uzbekinvest has been renamed into AIG Uzbekinvest in line with the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan.

The Government of Uzbekistan issued a resolution "On introduction of changes to "On introduction of changes to the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers "On formation of joint insurance companies Uzbekinvest International, Сhartis Uzbekistan and Сhartis Uzbekinvest Agency" from 23 November 1994".

The resolution said that the shareholders of Chartis Uzbekinvest agency decided to rename the company into AIG Uzbekinvest.

National Export-Import Insurance company Uzbekinvest holds 49% stake in the agency, while US firm AIG - 51%.

AIG Uzbekinvest carries out agent functions of Uzbekinvest International on expertise and signing insurance agreements.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France in Uzbekistan Jacques-Henry HEULS met with acting Chairman of the State Committee on Geology and Mineral Resources Ilhomboy Turamuratov.

During the meeting the sides discussed the state of Uzbek mining sector and the possibility of cooperation with France in this area.

Note that projects currently implemented in Uzbekistan are aimed at increasing production and processing of mineral resources. Mining sector development is aimed at increasing exports and supporting the growth of national industry.

In Angren special industrial zone (SIZ) it is planned to launch the manufacture of drugs for treatment of respiratory diseases.

According to Jahon news agency, the new venture will be built as part of a joint project with Chinese Kunmin Pharmaceutical. The agreement was signed on February 2013.

The total project cost is $14 million, of which 50% are foreign investments.

The full capacity of the plant is 2 million doses of drugs per year.

The Decree of the President of Uzbekistan "On creation of Angren special industrial zone dated April 13, 2012 gave a powerful impetus to the development of the territory. Implementation of important tasks contributed to creating of favorable conditions to attract foreign capital, creation of new facilities for manufacture of products with high added value and to raise competitiveness in domestic and foreign markets, efficient use of production and resource potential of Tashkent region.

The Committee on agriculture and water issues of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis held an expanded session to discuss issues on developing agriculture sector in the country on 7 January 2014.

The session said that agriculture sector is important industry of economy of Uzbekistan, which play a key role in food provision to population and their employment.

It was noted that Uzbekistan created firm legal base for development of agriculture sector. About 20 laws and over 200 legal acts, directed at regulation social-economic and production relations in the sector, were adopted.

Among them are Land Code of Uzbekistan, law "On farm entities", law "On dehkan entities" and others, which serve as legal base for activities in agriculture sector.

The committee outlined plans for 2014 and said that it will ensure execution of laws in agriculture sector and raise efficiency of their realization through analysis of the legal acts and introducing necessary changes and amendments. The focus will be on developing farm movement and raising role of farm entities in sustainable and effective development of agriculture sector.

MPs offered to hold special roundtable to study opinions and recommendations on implementation of the President of Uzbekistan at his speech on 8 December 2013. MPs also noted that the committee should further improve its activities based on modern requirements.

It was underlined that MPs should strengthen cooperation with scientists and analysts to achieve sound economic and social results in agriculture sector with rational use of material and financial opportunities of the multifield farms, which are created in Uzbekistan.

The session said that the committee should pay attention to increasing political, legal and economic culture of youth in 2014, as well as protecting maternity and childhood, strengthening health in the families, etc.

The committee adopted a decision directed at further improving legal base for developing agriculture industry and execution of laws in the sector.
