Faculty, Administrators Network and Move Forward on Collaborative Projects at Summer Institute

Attendees exchange info with
Inside Higher Ed's Scott Jaschik

The 19th Annual Summer Institute held at Hamline University from June 17-19, 2015, gave administrators and faculty the opportunity to explore news ways of addressing opportunities and challenges in higher education.

The theme, "Convergence: Developing the Holistic University," was inspired by the recent release of the Teagle-funded monograph, "Redefining the Paradigm: Faculty Models to Support Student Learning." There was an extensive department chair workshop to learn how to begin creating holistic departments - or elements thereof - on their campuses.

Sage Students Build Foundation before Committing to Civic Engagement

Building on the civic engagement theme at the Summer Institute, Eileen V. Brownell, an associate professor and chairperson of the School of Management at The Sage Colleges, gave an inspirational workshop on how she approached a civic engagement project in the Leadership and Diversity course that she teaches.

"I didn't want to go in on the first day and say 'We're doing this project' because then it's Professor Brownell's project, not theirs," said Brownell.

Wise Advice for Graduates

North Central College
celebrated its commencement after our round-up of commencement quotes was posted last month.

You are graduating from one of the finest schools in America this day because along the way your hard work was matched by many others-parents, teachers, friends-your support system. It will always be thus. If you think all your victories are due solely to your own merits and efforts, some day you may find others giving you the chance to test this proposition. All alone.

-- Harold R. Wilde, President Emeritus, North Central College

Dr. Wilde also authored a piece about the importance of supporting liberal arts institutions. It was originally published by Zocalo Public Square on June 16 and later syndicated to a number of outlets including the Time magazine website.
