Educating a New Generation of Entrepreneurs


Higher education's role in educating entrepreneurs has come a long way in Belmont University Professor Jeff Cornwall's career. In the 1970s, when the idea of entrepreneurship as a major was emerging, Cornwall started businesses as a college student. His grandfather and father were entrepreneurs, so it came naturally to him. Yet although he was a good student, at least one professor suggested that college wasn't the place for someone who wanted to start and grow businesses.

Harvard Researcher Cathy Trower to Speak at Summer Institute  
 
Cathy Ann Trower, research director at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a nationally renowned expert on faculty work/life issues, will speak at this year's NAC&U Summer Institute at The University of Scranton 
 
Last June, Trower published "Success on the Tenure Track: Five Keys to Faculty Job Satisfaction," based on research that surveyed more than 15,000 tenure-track faculty at 200 institutions.

With Help from Wagner, Nazareth Pitches in for Hurricane Sandy Relief 

 

The Nazareth College Center for Civic Engagement, in collaboration with Wagner College, New York Cares, and All Hands Volunteers in Staten Island, sponsored a Hurricane Sandy Rebuild service trip for Nazareth students, faculty and staff recently. Wagner provided overnight accommodations, boxed lunches and an orientation to the Staten Island community for all traveling from Nazareth. Without a place to stay, Nazareth would have been unable to travel and assist in the relief efforts.

John Carroll Professor's Poetry Featured on "The Writer's Almanac"
 
A poem by George Bilgere, PhD, John Carroll University associate professor of English, was recently featured on "The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor." Keillor read "Musial," a poem that Bilgere wrote about the Hall of Fame baseball player Stan Musial. Works by Bilgere have been featured more than 30 times on "The Writer's Almanac." Last December, he was a featured guest on Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion." To read the poem, go here.
Career Survey Reveals 92% Placement Rate for 2012 University of Evansville Graduates

A recently completed survey of the University of Evansville's 2012 graduating class found that 92 percent are employed or in graduate school. Other highlights include:  
* The median salary of graduates employed full-time was $42,500.
* Sixty-two percent of employed graduates were working in Indiana. When entering UE in fall 2006, 57 percent of this class was from Indiana.
* Thirty-two percent of graduates not currently in graduate school indicated plans to pursue graduate school within the next three years.

Robert Niehoff, SJ, president of John Carroll University, and Richard Guarasci, president of Wagner College and chair of NAC&U, were recently appointed to the board of directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
