Park district puts
library budget measure before voters

The Point Roberts Parks and Recreation District commissioners have approved a ballot measure asking voters for up to $300,000 to make up a projected budget shortfall for the new library project, and they're looking for community members to argue for and against the measure.

Port director addressses PRCAC

Customs and Border Protection port director George Gibson, who took over the Point Roberts position in April, addressed the Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee and audience members at the committee's July 12 meeting. Gibson, who lives on the Point and knows the frustration of long lines, said he was committed to improving the efficiency of the port. That said, he also asked the traveling public to remember that officers are fulfilling an important law enforcement role, and the Point Roberts border gets its fair share of lawbreakers, from drug smuggling to theft of intellectual property.
County council seeks applicants
to write voters' pamphlet statements

On May 31, 2016, the Whatcom County Council adopted Ordinance 2016-019, submitting to the voters of Whatcom County a ballot proposition to authorize the county to impose a regular property tax levy of $.0295 or less per $1,000 of assessed valuation, beginning in 2017 and continuing for six consecutive years, for the continued provision of emergency medical services.

PUBLIC NOTICE:

The Point Roberts Park and Recreation District #1 has, by majority vote, decided to present a levy request to the registered voters of Point Roberts for the approval of a one-time property tax levy in an amount not to exceed $300,000 for the purpose of funding the gap between monies raised privately by the Friends of the Point Roberts Library ($540,000) and the estimated costs of renovation of Julius Fire Hall ($800,000) to house the library.

The park district is mandated to make its best efforts to appoint both a pro and a con committee to the proposed levy. The Friends of the Point Roberts Library have currently presented a candidate pro committee for consideration for appointment by the park district.
This notice asks that any persons interested in serving on either committee, noting that a need exists specifically for participants on a con committee, to please contact the park district via email, at PRParks@pointroberts.net.

The park district will hold a special meeting on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 6 p.m. to formally appoint both committees, each of which should consist of no less than three people.
The requirements of each committee are:

- To produce a statement in favor of the Pro/Con position of the committee for submission on or before August 8, 2016, and

- To produce a rebuttal to the opposing campaign on or before August 11, 2016.

The statements are to be published in the Voters Pamphlet prior to the November election.
If you are interested in serving on either committee, please submit your request for consideration, by email, to PRParks@pointroberts.net.

Thank you,
Linda Hughes, Chairperson
Point Roberts Park and Recreation District #1
