Friends of the Point Roberts Library AGM

Michael Cox, the new deputy director of the Whatcom County Library System, and a conch player, gave a conch salute to the Friends of the Point Roberts Library (FOPRL) for their successful fundraising campaign to build a new library. The group's annual general meeting on April 3 focussed on how to take the new library project to completion. With 1,035 donors on record, the fundraising campaign has raised $540,000.

"We collected a tremendous amount of money just from change jars," said Judy Ross.

The goal is to renovate the Julius Fire Station, owned by the local parks and recreation district, into a new library, with the understanding the parks district would make up any funding shortfall once fundraising had run its course.

"We did send a notice to our partners that phase had been completed," said Stephen Falk, parks commissioner and FOPRL member.

The project has run into a few hitches at recent meetings, including a call to redesign it and opposition from parks district president Linda Hughes to asking voters if they would support the project through a levy. These issues will be on the agenda of a special work session of the parks district at 5:30 p.m. on April 11 at the Gulf Road community center.
