Deputies tighten up leash laws

A sudden uptick in off-leash dog citations has taken many dog owners by surprise. While traditionally law enforcement and county parks staff have been tolerant of off-leash dogs, local sheriff's deputies and new ranger Aaron Johnson are making strict adherence a priority.

Art and craft fair scheduled for next month

The Point Roberts Saturday Market at the community center wrapped up for the year on Labor Day weekend, but organizers are planning to move inside for a Harvest Art, Craft and Collectible Fair.

Research group praises NEXUS

NEXUS users get a lot of bang for their buck, according to the authors of a new study.

On September 14, researchers at Western Washington University's Border Policy Research Institute (BPRI) released the study, "Monetizing some benefits of participation in NEXUS." The study found that people with NEXUS and other Trusted Traveler passes experience dramatically shorter wait times than non-NEXUS users, which leads to more money saved in personal time, decreased fuel use and other environmental benefits.

Salmon derby held next weekend

The Point Roberts Marina is hosting its second annual salmon derby on Saturday, September 26.

Tickets are available at Nielson's Building Center, the Pier Restaurant and the Point Roberts Marina office. Adult tickets are $50, $10 for kids ages 13-19 and free for children 12 and under. Ticket price includes a burger and a beverage, plus a shot at cash and prizes.

Organizer Whitney McElroy, who also organized the successful Point Roberts Salmon Classic in August, said top prize for the biggest salmon was guaranteed at at least $1,000, and prizes include fishing trips and gear.
