Newest version of Valero sign is a no-go




Whatcom County denied an application for a 25-foot internally lit sign at the Valero station on Gulf Road, which sent indignant owner Fred Pakzad back to the character plan committee.

From l., Judy Ross and Rose Momsen present raffle winner Yazmin Colberg, pictured with her niece, with "The Boat Quilt" at the August 16 quilt show benefitting the new library construction fund. In total, including raffle and quilt sales, the event raised $4,600. The show featured Ross' work and explored the evolution of quilting from craft to art form.

Campfires now allowed in western Washington


The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced August 15 that it is adjusting the statewide burn ban initiated on August 11.

Shellfish harvesters: Know before you dig

 


Joshua Leinbach, an environmental health specialist with the Whatcom County Health Department (WCHD), knows why it's critical that recreational shellfish harvesters are aware that a beach has been closed to harvesting. 

County police officers step up DUI patrols

 

Police forces throughout Whatcom and San Juan counties are intent on stopping and discouraging driving under the influence.

There were 1,270 people in Whatcom and San Juan counties charged with DUIs last year. "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" is an annual program focused on reducing that number.
