Arts and Music Festival

This year's Point Roberts Arts and Music Festival will start earlier than usual to give festival-goers the chance to view more performers, and give them more than one chance to catch their acts.

"We've expanded the times and we're having more acts because of it," said organizer and performer Craig Jacks.

The 18th annual festival, sponsored again by Westshore Terminals, will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4 at Lighthouse Marine Park, with breakfast items available for purchase.

Call for committee to oppose proposed Park and Recreation District bond measure

The parks board is placing a measure on the November 5 general election ballot to request voter approval of a $250,000 bond measure, not to exceed 10 years, to finance needed capital improvements to the Point Roberts community center.

The main improvements to be undertaken are a new roof, new heating and air conditioning units on the roof, improved drainage to alleviate chronic water problems underneath the building and an additional storage shed.

The parks board has already identified two people to form a "Pro" committee to prepare a 200-word statement in favor of the measure for inclusion in the voters' pamphlet.

The board is also required to appoint a "Con" committee of two to three people if there are residents opposed to the bond measure who would like to submit a statement.

If you wish to serve on a "Con" committee, contact parks commissioner Mark Robbins at 945-1357 or mark.robbins@prodigy.net.

The deadline for appointment of committees is Monday, August 12.
