Pre-register for the races now, and no later than 11 a.m. on June 30. Pick up details at Nielson's or call 945-3116. For more information on specifications and rules, visit http://www.beltsanderdragraces.com/rules.html.

What a week!

Get ready to party the first week of July!

The fun starts on June 30 with the Belt Sander Races at Nielson's Building Center.

The Pier Restaurant and Grill will hold events on July 1 and July 4 to celebrate the Canadian and U.S. national holidays. On Canada Day the event will start in the early afternoon and on Independence Day head over right after the parade. There will be a beer garden and an outdoor barbecue with live music, dunk tank and carnival booths to benefit Dollars for Students, and fireworks at dusk on both days.

On July 4 the parade will start at noon from the Reef and wind down Gulf Road to the marina's overflow parking lot. The theme this year is "Remember When." Heather McPhee, president of Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce, hopes the theme will inspire people to create floats of popular Point Roberts sites of the past. Participants are encouraged to get there at 11 a.m. to register.

New this year, spectators can become participants in the parade and do some good for the community by bringing canned goods and non-perishable items to the parade route, where the Wackie Walkers will come by to pick them up as a donation for the local food bank.

If you get hungry at the parade, wander over to the community center, where the Point Roberts Seniors Association and PREP will be selling barbeque, hot dogs, soda and snacks from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Summer art exhibit

Stop by the community center to view the summer art show by local artist Savilla Kress. Unofficially, the theme of the exhibit is "Consciousness of Color," with 21 paintings already on display in the community center hallway. View these pieces at your convenience, now through the end of September, or attend the wine and cheese reception on Friday, July 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the community center. Entrance is by donation. For more information, contact Mark Robbins at [email protected].
