Point Roberts skaters band together to save park
With the future of the skate park on the agenda at the June 13 meeting of the Point Roberts Parks and Recreation District, more than 20 local skaters showed up to pledge their support for keeping and improving the facility. "We've all grown up with it," Marissa Jacks said. "People all have talents they can add to the park."
Parks commission chairman Mark Robbins said the district was willing to keep the skate park going and even pay to improve it, but "we want the skating community to take leadership." He said there remained $600 earmarked for the park from previous fundraising efforts. Commissioners appointed Linda Hughes as the parks district liaison and Adam Remi will represent the skaters in requesting the funds for repairs and improvements.
Ron Hughes suggested the skaters form a club. "You guys need to get together and make a plan," he said. While there was some enthusiasm for a skate club there was also a sense of urgency. "We need to do the work right now," said Tracy Kelly, whose family of skateboard enthusiasts has already begun clearing blackberries and painting.
