Getting the commissioners fired up to give

Library fundraising queen Judy Ross, center, attended the May 8 meeting of the fire district commissioners to drum up donations for a new library.

"We are asking at least 1,000 people in Point Roberts to donate $20," she said. "Then we would have $40,000 because we have a $20,000 matching grant." She garnered $100 for the effort at that meeting, including donations from fire commissioners Bill Meursing and Stan Riffle, at rear. Donations can be made, and a button earned, at Sterling Savings Bank and at the local library.

Ross said the library construction fund has currently raised $167,000, with a goal of $300,000 by the end of 2013 and an ultimate goal of $500,000. Fund raisers are currently also looking for five $20,000 donors to secure a $100,000 matching grant that would bring them closer to their goal: A new library in the old Julius fire station on Gulf Road.

Contact Ross at 945-3180 to make a donation.

Several years ago, judges statewide began urging the legislature for more stable funding for the trial courts so we could provide equal and accessible justice across our state. At that time, our great state of Washington was dead last - 50th out of 50 states - for the money the state spent on our trial courts. Even worse, the money the state spent on the entire judicial branch of government was only 3/10ths of 1 percent of the state operating budget. Read editorial.
