Point Roberts Garden Club president Scott Hackleman was part of the crew that faced a windy, soggy Saturday morning to put in the club's newest plantings on Tyee Drive. Members planted rhododendrons, flowering currant, miniature escallonia and other shrubs in the mounds along Tyee Drive to provide year-round interest. The daffodil bulbs that have lit up the side of the roads each spring are being relocated to rings around existing maple trees. Future plans include hardscaping and planting additional perennials. The club used more than $4,000 raised through a garden tour and plant sale,  with donated materials and volunteer labor, for their newest beautification project.

Legalization of recreational marijuana

The Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) is moving to carry out Initiative 502, which establishes precedent for growing, processing, retailing and possessing marijuana. The WSLCB expects it to take until December 1, 2013, to create a system for implementation.

Effective December 6, 2012, possession of one ounce of useable marijuana by Washington state residents over the age of 21 will be legal. However, the federal government still classifies cannabis as an illegal narcotic, so anyone attempting to take it over the border will face severe consequences.
