Phil Jackson, part of the Whatcom County Parks trail crew, takes a breather from spreading gravel on the new beach trail at Lily Point Marine Park. The trail is now complete and ready to use and crews have started widening existing user trails to create an upland loop.
Complete burn ban ordered by Whatcom County
Due to dry weather conditions and increased fire risk the Whatcom County Fire Marshall has ordered a complete burn ban in effect as of 4 p.m., October 12, 2012. The ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including recreational burning at permitted fire pits. Barbecues are allowed if they are fueled by propane or charcoal. Violations may result in a minimum $250 fine and violators can be held financially responsible for fire suppression costs. For more information please call 360/676-6934.
New fire commissioner starts meeting with a roar  
Jeff Wilmot shook things up at his first meeting as a commissioner for the Point Roberts fire district, putting forward motions to alter commission structure and compensation, and scuttling a motion to increase the chief's discretionary spending. Turn to page

PSE HomePrint Assessment: The HomePrint program, sponsored by Puget Sound Energy, will provide free energy assessments of local homes from October 10 to 17 and will kick off with a sign-up event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the International Marketplace on October 12. Residents not already on the list can sign up for a free evaluation of their home's energy efficiency and tips on how to save energy at little cost to the homeowner. Up to 50 free energy-efficient light bulbs are part of the package. Info: 800/341-8590

Tsunami Siren: Thursday, October 18, 10:18 a.m., the tsunami siren at the corner of Tyee Drive and APA Road will sound for approximately three minutes as a test of the tsunami warning system.
