3Rs Teaching Tips: Lesson One

Hello, 3Rs volunteers. Please read and review the following important information regarding Lesson One - this Friday, Oct. 9.

NEW CURRICULUM THIS YEAR - RETURNING VOLUNTEERS PLEASE NOTE
Returning volunteers should please note that we will be teaching from our NEW curriculum this year.  If you have not done so already, you will need to replace your 2014-15 Instructors Guide with the NEW 2015-16 Instructors Guide available online here and distributed at all orientation sessions this fall.  As a reminder, the new lessons reflect the fact that we have changed from 10th grade U.S. History classes and will now be matched with 11th grade U.S. Government classes.  The lessons are designed to build and expand on the 3Rs curriculum that most of this year's students experienced last year as 10th graders.

Lesson One: Introduction to 3Rs
Lesson One starts by showing the 3Rs video shown last year, then focuses on the importance of having career goals and taking affirmative steps to achieving them. The Lesson reflects that we are working with most of the same students we had last year, including a focus on what the students that had 3Rs last year have done during the summer toward furthering their career plans.

MATERIALS PICKUP
Materials FOR THE FULL YEAR (Student Worksheets and 3Rs Folders) will be available for pickup at the CMBA offices beginning Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 6.  We ask that team captains or a designated team representative stop in during office hours (8:30 to 5:00) before Friday for pickup, or contact us as soon as possible to make alternative arrangements.  Please note that the materials for the first lesson include student folders and all worksheets for the year, and are relatively heavy to carry.
REMINDERS FOR NEW AND RETURNING VOLUNTEERS
There will be six lessons this year, rather than the usual seven, beginning with the first planned visit this Friday, Oct. 9.  For a full schedule, please see the Calendar tab on the 3Rs page at www.clemetrobar.org/3Rs.  As in years past, if you are unable to make it on a regularly planned lesson day, please let your team captain know at your earliest convenience so that he/she may make arrangements for a schedule that best suits your team.

BLOCK SCHEDULING
Many teams have been assigned to schools that operate on "Block Schedules" (this applies only to teams where "Block Class" was noted in your school assignment emails).  Block classes meet every other day (e.g. one week, A Block meets during that time MWF, the next week TTh; while the B Block class for that period meets TTh then MWF the following week, etc.).  This means that on a regularly-scheduled official 3Rs lesson day, some classes will NOT be meeting that Friday.  Team captains are asked to please stay in contact with your teachers to confirm when their class will be meeting.

Because they only meet every other day, block periods are longer than regular period (on average 80 minutes rather than 40).  Teams assigned to Block classes have the flexibility to decide whether you would prefer 1) to conduct the lesson for just 40 minutes during the period; 2) to teach the lesson in-depth and take up the whole period; or 3) to teach two lessons per visit and cut in half your number of total visits. It is important for team captains to communicate with your team and your teacher to coordinate a lesson plan and schedule of visits that works for you.
MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Please talk with your friends and colleagues about signing up for The 3Rs this year, our 10th Anniversary!  There is still room for new volunteers, who may choose to make their first classroom visit with you this week or to go on a later date.  With your help, we can make this year the best response from our legal community yet!
