This Friday, April 19, is the regularly scheduled 3Rs Lesson Six classroom visit. This lesson is the first lesson of the year to focus on career and educational counseling. As local professionals who work outside students' schools and have gone through the process of pursuing higher education, volunteers are in a unique and important position to impart information and support about post-high school options and resources.
The student worksheets for Lesson Six (Laying the Foundation for a Career) are now available at the CMBA offices. We ask that captains or team representatives please stop by for pickup before this Friday's lesson, unless alternative arrangements have been made. Volunteers should please note that the Lesson Six materials have been updated from the 2011-12 version - returning volunteers who did not receive the updated version at the beginning of the school year can download the current version here.
Volunteers should also direct students to their high school guidance counselors' offices for additional information about internships, career selection, and other available resources. Additional resources include College Now Greater Cleveland, whose representatives in all Cleveland and East Cleveland high schools help provide students with guidance and access to funds to prepare for and graduate from college. Click here for a list with the name and contact information of the College Now representative(s) at your school. You may also wish to inform students that the National Association for College Admission Counseling will be holding its 2013 Spring National College Fair in Cleveland on April 21 - more details here.
Please direct students to the Online Student Resources tab on the 3Rs page of the CMBA website at www.clemetrobar.org/3Rs. The tab is an ongoing source of information related to higher education and other issues discussed during career counseling sessions. If you have any additions for Student Resources, please let us know by emailing jpaine@clemetrobar.org.
To share with your students: The U.S. Census Bureau released a report April 2 stating that higher education is worth the investment, even in a tight economy. The report found that workers with a college degree earned nearly twice as much as people with a high school degree in the last three months of 2011. Click here for a news article describing the report, here for the government data. We encourage you to print copies of the article to distribute to your students as we discuss the importance of higher education this month.
IMPORTANT FOR TEAM RECOGNITION: Team rosters and feedback
Please take a moment to let us know how your 3Rs year has gone so far by emailing jpaine@clemetrobar.org. In order to properly recognize all committed volunteers, we would like to hear from you with the following information:
- A full team roster including only those volunteers who have regularly attended 3Rs sessions (response requested from team captains only)
- Any stories/feedback you wish to share of your experiences (all volunteers)
- Any outstanding 3Rs students from your classes: We would like to feature 3Rs students for recognition and promotion with the program. If you know of any outstanding students in your classes who would like to share their experience, please let us know at your earliest convenience.
