3Rs Lesson Four Teaching Tips
Please review the full email for important 3Rs information!
Dear 3Rs volunteer:
This Friday, Jan. 25, is the regularly scheduled 3Rs Lesson Four classroom visit - Due Process. Student worksheets for this lesson were distributed earlier this month along with the materials for Lesson Three - please be sure to bring the appropriate worksheets with you when you visit the classrooms this Friday. If you will need more copies of the student worksheets, please let us know.
Time management: Prepare in advance! Read the materials for Lesson Four, know what is included and be sure to cover the materials in small groups rather than in full lecture format.
Due Process in the News: If you find you have extra time after covering the day's lesson, you may wish to review the information found in the first two sections of the Optional Student Activites pages of the Student Worksheets. These sections cover important and topical due process issues raised by Roe v. Wade and the Hamdi v. Rumsfeld and Boumediene v. Bush line of Supreme Court decisions.
School closings: We encourage you to check with the schools the day of your 3Rs class in case inclement weather has forced the school to close. Phone numbers for the schools may be found here. To check for closings online, click here. If you discover your school has been closed on Friday, please notify your captain and teammates and Jessica Paine at (216) 696-3525 x4462. 3Rs lessons cancelled due to school closings may be rescheduled according to your teacher and teammates' preferences.
Did you know? 3Rs lessons are online: Videos of full 3Rs lessons have been posted on the 3Rs page online (click here). The video for Lesson Four - Due Process features U.S. District Court Judge Dan Polster as well as 3Rs volunteer and curriculum author Carter Strang teaching this month's lesson. These videos may be used as additional resources for volunteers and students pre- and post-lessons. Alternately, volunteers who choose to do so and have time may bring laptops with them to class to share parts or all of the videos with the students. Students should be encouraged to view the videos at home or at the library.
Team feedback: Your feedback is vital to the program. Team captains: please let us know about your experience during the visit, especially names of teammates whom you were unable to contact and any issues that need to be resolved before Friday's lesson.
