Dear Ones,

I hope to see many of you at the Meeting House on Sunday, as we launch our 2016-17 UU year! We will start the year together, all ages in one 10 a.m worship service, which should offer something for everyone.

We will explore the power of connection and our related call as UU's to build heaven on earth. At the end of worship, we'll have a creative opportunity to send out our hopes for "heaven on earth" into the wider world. We'll also welcome our new Director of Music, Jennifer Carpenter, and our Ministerial Intern, Andre Mol.

Immediately after the service, we'll have a chance live out our First UU mission and values (not to mention have fun!) by marching in the annual Burlington Pride Parade. Shortly after worship, our First UU contingent will be heading off to the staging area at the old Hood Plant parking lot on lower Church Street. We'll have a handful of rainbow UU flags for folks to take with them, but feel free to bring your own rainbow/festive accoutrements, signs, etc. and/or wear a Standing on the Side of Love shirt if you have one. Meet on the front lawn by the Labyrinth immediately after the service, and head down to the staging area together at 11:15.

Earlier in the day, in recognition of the 15th anniversary of September 11, we will open the Sanctuary for a sacred time of quiet remembrance. The space will be open between 9:00 and 9:40 a.m. for silent meditation, prayer, candle-lighting, and reflection. You are welcome to come for the entire time or stop in briefly to light a devotional candle. We will open and close the space by sounding the Tibetan singing bowl, but otherwise, it will be an unstructured time.

So much has happened in our community and our world since the start of summer. Amidst it all, it will be good to be back together, friends, to continue our shared search for truth and meaning, to nurture our weary spirits, and to renew our commitment to act for justice and to help heal our world in the year to come.

With love,
Rev. Mara

Toward a Just Economy
by Gene Bergman

The First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington's
Economic Justice Task Force invites you to an evening discussion:

"Toward a Just Economy: A Framework for Progress"
with Vermont Interfaith Action, Public Assets Institute, and Rights & Democracy

 When: Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: First Unitarian Universalist Society Meeting House

The greatest defense of democracy is an informed and active citizenry.  In the face of growing inequality and cynicism, we are fortunate to have bold, brave people organizing for change. Please join us to discuss ideas to move us forward to a just society, ways to hold candidates and government officials accountable, and ideas you can act on during the next session of the Vermont Legislature, including the campaign for the $15/hour wage by 2020, paid family and medical leave, and a current services budget.
