IT'S BEER FEST SEASON! Yup, there are quite a few events on the horizon where you'll be able to enjoy some 2oz pours of craft beer or liters of some delicious German beers. Whether we are talking beer fest or Oktoberfest, there is beer to be had. Excited? Thirsty? Yup, we are too. But, remember it's a marathon... not a sprint so here are a few pieces of advice to help you navigate fest season.
- Food: Whether you wear a pretzel necklace or buy a nice bratwurst, remember to eat. A good base will always help you keep your wits about you
- Hydration: Yup session beers are great but they are no direct replacement for water. Remember to put a glass of water into the rotation between beers. It makes a huge difference... I promise you.
- Think in ABVs (Alcohol By Volume): Remember that a lot of little samples add up quickly so keep in mind that you might not want to try 10 different imperial styles back to back (this is where the session beer comes in). Low ABV is your friend during a long festival. Of course, try the big beers but just make sure you're balancing them with smaller beers and water as well.
- Savor: You don't need to throw back the tiny cups at beer festivals in one sip. If you're looking for the full experience, you're going to want to look at the beer, smell the beer and take a few sips of that 2oz pour to get a real feel for the liquid. Really experiencing the beer will slow you down and allow you to enjoy the experience longer.
- Start Early: If you're hitting an Oktoberfest, it's an all day affair. You don't need to stay the entire time but it's nice to start early and end early. The next morning you'll feel a lot better if you had a full day of beer the day before and hit the hay early. It's the late nights that'll get ya...
- Plan Ahead: Most importantly, BE SAFE. Call a cab or uber. Plan on having a designated driver. It's never worth it to drink and drive so plan ahead and be safe. As we've always said "a cab ride is a lot cheaper than a lawyer".
Just a few tips for the coming weeks. We hope to see you out at one of the many events going on. If you've got any tips you'd like to add, feel free to share them with us on our facebook, instagram or twitter pages... We're still learning too. See you beer fans out there!

Boulevard Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that's just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.
8.5% ABV

Boulevard Sixth Glass Quad

Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains-barley, wheat, rye, and oats-into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish. 9.7% ABV

Founders Dark Penance
A heavy malt foundation includes Crystal malt for sweetness and just enough Midnight Wheat malt to push the color to black. The bitterness is huge, but balanced by malt sweetness and alcohol burn. Ommegang Game of Thrones 4: Valar Morghulis
Valar Morghulis possesses a deep chestnut brown color with a persistent and creamy tan head. Rich aromas of caramel, toffee, ripe fruits and burnt sugar, with a hint of cloves. The taste is delicately balanced with rich malty sweetness, caramel and just enough bitterness to balance out its malty backbone. Funky Buddha Nickolai Vorlauf
Imperial Stout

|
Stone Xocoveza Mocha Stout
This year's winner of our American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned homebrewing competition, Chris Banker, helped keep us grounded to our homebrewing roots by introducing flavors consistent with our regional palate. His chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, chile pepper and coffee-infused milk stout was built to mimic the flavors of Mexican hot chocolate, a beloved specialty from our neighbors to the south, as our callaborators from Baja California, Cervezería Insurgente, will attest. Layered with tiers of earthiness, spice and roast, this creamy, semisweet blue-ribbon beer confirms that the spirit of the American homebrewer is not only alive and kicking, but thriving at an all-time high. 8.1% ABV

Meads of the Moment
By: William Bostwick via Wall Street Journal
Mead tends to conjure images of Renaissance Faires and "Game of Thrones." Yet the warehouse headquarters of San Francisco Mead Company, in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood, are markedly modern. Clutching scientific sampling vials, owners Oron and Sarah Benary move among the 300-gallon plastic tanks where honey and water are fermenting with yeast. Their flagship California Gold, a still, dry mead, is sharp and bright-a far cry from the cloying sweetness many people expect from this drink.

The Thing You Least Expect Could Kill Some of Your Favorite Beer

By: Greg Engert via Esquire
The Brewers Association released its mid-year report on the state of craft beer back in June. Craft beer sales have increased by a rate of 17.2% during the first half of 2014 with over 3,000 US breweries now in operation and nearly 2,000 on the way. And yet, a concern for our collective future has accompanied the celebration of our industry's growth. Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head, recently warned that a competitive era for craft beer is dawning. His prediction: "There's a bloodbath coming."

Beer Pot Roast
By: Brooklyn Brew Shop
INGREDIENTS
1 (4-6 pound) beef chuck roast
1 tablespoon coarse salt
1 tablespoon freshly ground pepper
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
1 tablespoon grapeseed or canola oil
2 large onions, thinly sliced
3 carrots, chopped
3 cloves garlic, crushed
2 cups dried porcini mushrooms
6 sprigs of fresh thyme
2 bay leaves
2 dried chilli peppers, split
2 (12-ounce) bottles of dark, flavorful beer
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 300° F.
Combine salt, pepper, paprika and cayenne. Rub generously over pot roast and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the pot roast well, until it's crusty on all sides. Transfer to a plate.
Add the onions, carrots, mushrooms, garlic, chilies, thyme, and bay leaf to the pan. Cook, stirring often, until the onions have softened and reduced in volume by about half.
Pour in the beer and scrape the bottom of the pan to release any of the browned bits from the beef. Bring the sauce to a boil.
Nestle the pot roast in the sauce, cover the pan, and roast for 1 hour. Turn the pot roast over, cover the pan again, and roast for another hour.
Remove pot roast from pan and let rest 12 minutes before carving. Remove thyme sprigs, chili peppers and bay leaves from sauce. Transfer vegetables and cooking liquid to a blender and blend until smooth. Top thinly sliced roast with gravy. Enjoy!
