October 10, 2014
IT'S BEER FEST SEASON! Yup, there are quite a few events on the horizon where you'll be able to enjoy some 2oz pours of craft beer or liters of some delicious German beers.. Whether we are talking beer fest or Oktoberfest, there is beer to be had. Excited? Thirsty? Yup, we are too. But, remember it's a marathon... not a sprint so here are a few pieces of advice to help you navigate fest season.
  1. Food: Whether you wear a pretzel necklace or buy a nice bratwurst, remember to eat. A good base will always help you keep your wits about you
  2. Hydration: Yup session beers are great but they are no direct replacement for water. Remember to put a glass of water into the rotation between beers. It makes a huge difference... I promise you.
  3. Think in ABVs (Alcohol By Volume): Remember that a lot of little samples add up quickly so keep in mind that you might not want to try 10 different imperial styles back to back (this is where the session beer comes in). Low ABV is your friend during a long festival. Of course, try the big beers but just make sure you're balancing them with smaller beers and water as well.
  4. Savor: You don't need to throw back the tiny cups at beer festivals in one sip. If you're looking for the full experience, you're going to want to look at the beer, smell the beer and take a few sips of that 2oz pour to get a real feel for the liquid. Really experiencing the beer will slow you down and allow you to enjoy the experience longer.
  5. Start Early: If you're hitting an Oktoberfest, it's an all day affair. You don't need to stay the entire time but it's nice to start early and end early. The next morning you'll feel a lot better if you had a full day of beer the day before and hit the hay early. It's the late nights that'll get ya...
  6. Plan Ahead: Most importantly, BE SAFE. Call a cab or uber.  Plan on having a designated driver. It's never worth it to drink and drive so plan ahead and be safe. As Adam always used to say "a cab ride is a lot cheaper than a lawyer".
Just a few tips for the coming weeks. We hope to see you out at one of the many events going on. If you've got any tips you'd like to add, feel free to share them with us on our facebook, instagram or twitter pages... We're still learning too. See you beer fans out there!

Saltwater Brewery Octo-Festbier
Octo-Festbier pours an amber color with a toffee and tropical fruit nose. The toffee flavor follows through with the first sip and finishes with a tropical fruit finish. This beer is perfect for the Florida "Fall" weather. 5.8% ABV
Saltwater Brewery Pumpkin Puffer Stout
The aroma of our Pumpkin Puffer Stout explodes with all of the smells one would expect when baking a pumpkin pie. Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and of course, roasted pumpkin are the dominate flavors of this beer. At first sip all of these spices cover your palate and leave a subtle aftertaste. This beer is a perfect pairing with your Thanksgiving dessert. 6.51% ABV
Twisted Pine Hop Zealot
We crafted this ale for those-some call them fanatics-devoted to the bountiful bines of the hop plant. Hop Zealot pours like a golden beam of sunshine with a massive blast of hop aroma that'll make a true believer out of any IPA lover. Drain every last drop and beseech the bottle for more, but do not forsake your friends... They're thirsty too! 6.7% ABV
Twisted Pine La Petite Saison
La Petite Saison is a beautifully crafted beer brewed in the Belgian farmhouse style. The award-winning ale relies on Pilsener malt and white wheat, gently flattered with German Perle, Czech Saaz and American Willamette hops which add subtle, yet intricate flavoring to the beer. The Belgian yeast headlines the show, lacing palates with the delicate, floral esters for which the style is known. LPS is a smooth sipper with a crisp finish, and at 5.3% ABV skirts the upper range of session territory.
Twisted Pine AuDACITY
To celebrate 19 years of brewing pretty much whatever we feel like, our crew turned to the devilishly imaginative Belgians for inspiration. AuDACITY combines Old World ingredients with homegrown Colorado crystal hops to form a shimmering, smooth and deceptively easy-to-drink treat. So grab a glass of gold and help us say cheers to 19 years! 9
% ABV
Southern Tier Tier De Garde
Tier de Garde is a Belgian Style India Pale Ale brewed with grapefruit peel. It is the third in our acclaimed Belgian Style Series. Tier de Garde is akin to a Belgian Tripel crossed with an American IPA. Deep copper in color with a thick, rocket white head and persistent lacing. It is noticeably hazy with yeast and sediment visible. Carefully pour it into your favorite glass. Citrusy, hoppy and spicy with some sweetness in the aroma, while being dry and effervescent on the tongue. The flavor is bitter and spicy, peppery and grapefruit zest is apparent. Also expect floral and apricot/pear notes 8.1% ABV
Boulevard Brewing Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that's just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish. 8.5% ABV
Boulevard Brewing 80-Acre Hoppy Wheat Beer
With roots in two of today's most popular brewing styles, 80-Acre Hoppy Wheat Beer is the result of careful cultivation by our brewers and cellarmen. Their efforts to craft a hybrid yielded a bumper crop of flavor; a delightfully distinctive ale with the aroma of an IPA and the refreshing taste of a wheat beer. 5.5% ABV
Boulevard Brewing Single-Wide I.P.A.
Boulevard Single-Wide I.P.A. is our take on a style that originated in 18th century Great Britain. This American version-inspired by our Smokestack Series Double-Wide I.P.A.-boasts a heady combination of six varieties of hops, some of which were employed for dry-hopping. 5.7% ABV
Boulevard Brewing Pop-Up Session I.P.A.
Boulevard Pop-Up Session IPA joins its big brothers Single-Wide and Double-Wide in our trailer park of hop-centric beers. This "session" model is built for the frequent excursions, with a very drinkable character and relatively low bitterness trucked behind a big, fruity hop aroma. 4.3% ABV
Boulevard Brewing Double-Wide I.P.A.
The classic India Pale Ale is a traveler's beer, aggressively hopped to withstand the long, hot ocean voyage to the British East Indies. Our Double-Wide I.P.A. also travels well, and is right at home in the most exotic ports of call of the Midwest. While this modern-day prairie schooner may not resemble a graceful sailing sloop, our liberal hopping regimen does make her virtually "twister-proof," with toffee and caramel notes balancing out the lingering bitterness. Enjoy this beer fresh to best appreciate the complex blending of hop aromas, ranging from minty to citrusy, with subtle hints of pine. 8.5% ABV
Boulevard Brewing Unfiltered Wheat Beer
Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat Beer is a lively, refreshing ale with a natural citrusy flavor and distinctive cloudy appearance. This easy drinking American-style wheat beer has become our most popular offering, and the best-selling craft beer in the Midwest. 4.4% ABV
Boulevard Brewing Dark Truth Stout
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains-barley, wheat, rye, and oats-into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish. 9.7% ABV
Boulevard Brewing The Sixth Glass
"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass. 10.5% ABV
Boulevard Brewing Long Strange Tripel
Lately it occurs to us that if, back in 1989, you planned on starting a brewery in the back of your carpentry shop, you'd been wise to seek out someone like Harold "Trip" Hogue. A collector of ancient Volvos, Trip was well qualified for the make-do engineering required to coax recalcitrant equipment out of retirement and into making the first Boulevard beers. Today, he is our longest-tenured employee. We offer this rich, golden Tripel in grateful tribute to dedication, everywhere. 9.2% ABV
Ommegang Game of Thrones Valar Morghulis
Valar Morghulis possesses a deep chestnut brown color with a persistent and creamy tan head. Rich aromas of caramel, toffee, ripe fruits and burnt sugar, with a hint of cloves. The taste is delicately balanced with rich malty sweetness, caramel and just enough bitterness to balance out its malty backbone. A surprisingly dry finish is light on the tongue, which belies the initial aroma. 8% ABV

Founders Dark Penance Imperial Black IPA
Dark Penance starts with a heavy malt foundation of Crystal malt for sweetness and just enough Midnight Wheat to push the color to black. The bitterness is huge (100 IBUs huge), but balanced by malt sweetness and alcohol burn. The hop flavors and aromas range from citrus to floral to pine-most everything that hops can be-thanks to a delicious blend of hand-selected Chinook and Centennial hops. 8.9% ABV.

Uinta Oak Jacked Imperial Pumpkin
Jacked is brewed with fresh pumpkin and fall spices and has been aging in Oak barrels for 6 months. The oak barrels add subtle nuances of toasted vanilla and bourbon notes.  Jacked is a big, unique pumpkin ale. 10.31% ABV

Breckenridge Mountain Series Sampler Pack
In addition to three favorite Breckenridge Brewery varieties, the Rocky Mountain Sampler will include a rotating, limited release Mountain Series beer, exclusive to the new package. Each beer in the series will offer a little something different based on the season, specially obtained ingredients, and whims of the brew staff. The Mountain Series celebrates the brewery's origin as a small, ski town brewpub passionate about crafting fun and adventurous beers.

Red Brick Thick Silky Double Chocolate Oatmeal Porter
All you suckas gather 'round, a brand new dude is coming to town! Thick Silky is a man with a plan and a Kung Fu backhand, you dig? He runs the chocolate game in this city, and when it comes to haters he shows no pity. With his fine, foxy ladies sitting pretty in a tricked out '73 Cadillac DeVille, he's down with the double chocolate oatmeal scene and keeping it real. So, if you crave satisfaction, Thick Silky is the man who's got that action! 7.7% ABV

Terrapin Midnight Monk
Take off your robe and slip into the night to get one step closer to the Holy Grail of all beers.  "Midnight Monk" Belgian-Style Black IPA will have your senses juggling all the complex flavor and aroma this beer has to offer. 9.8% ABV

Stone Xocoveza Mocha Stout
This year's winner of our American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned homebrewing competition, Chris Banker, helped keep us grounded to our homebrewing roots by introducing flavors consistent with our regional palate. His chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, chile pepper and coffee-infused milk stout was built to mimic the flavors of Mexican hot chocolate, a beloved specialty from our neighbors to the south, as our callaborators from Baja California, Cervezería Insurgente, will attest. Layered with tiers of earthiness, spice and roast, this creamy, semisweet blue-ribbon beer confirms that the spirit of the American homebrewer is not only alive and kicking, but thriving at an all-time high. 8.1% ABV

Funky Buddha Nickolai Vorlauf Imperial Stout
We brewed this imperial stout to be big, bold and strong, like a bear-hugging Russian wrestler. A thick body using oats and lactose is complimented by plenty of complex chocolate, cocoa, and caramel undertones, before finishing on a balanced roasty note. 10.5%
Funky Buddha Nitro Latte Porter
Thick, black, and creamy - that's our Nitro Espresso Porter. We use real espresso beans in this porter for a flavor that can only be described as freshly brewed. 5.4%

Your Beer Attracts Fruit Flies on Purpose
By: Annie Sneed

The characteristic smell of beer is very easy to recognize, and never fails to attract beer lovers. But now scientists have found that it's really meant to attract something else entirely: fruit flies.

It turns out those pesky, impossible-to-catch little flies aren't just an annoyance for brewers. Yeast and fruit flies have evolved a mutually beneficial relationship that hinges on that smell, according to new research.

Yeast produce small quantities of volatile compounds that give beer a pungent smell that's somewhat like ripening fruit. Scientists have already pinned down a particular gene that's responsible for most of these aromas -if they knock out the gene, species like S. cerevisiae (brewer's yeast) no longer release the fruity smells, and if they overactivate the gene, the yeast produce even more of the aroma.

While studying this years ago, bioengineer Kevin Verstrepen noticed that fruit flies in his lab swarmed around overactivated, flavorful yeast, and ignored non-fruity mutant yeast.

The Thing You Least Expect Could Kill Some Of Your Favorite Beer

The Brewers Association released its mid-year report on the state of craft beer back in June. Craft beer sales have increased by a rate of 17.2% during the first half of 2014 with over 3,000 US breweries now in operation and nearly 2,000 on the way. And yet, a concern for our collective future has accompanied the celebration of our industry's growth. Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head, recently warned that a competitive era for craft beer is dawning. His prediction: "There's a bloodbath coming."

Restaurants, bars, and retailers have aggressively expanded their craft beer offerings, fueling the growth of established and new breweries alike, while encouraging the plans of would-be craft brewers. But for all of craft beer's expansion, concerns abide about just where all of this beer will go, and which brewers will ultimately survive.

Germans Learn Craft Beers From U.S. to Bring Back Buzz

By: Stefan Nicola

In Germany, home of Oktoberfest and a five-century-old brewing law, beer consumption has been on an unstoppable decline, prompting Europe's biggest producer of the beverage to turn to an unlikely place for help: the U.S.

Oliver Lemke has been making trips to Colorado, New York and California, learning how craft brewers grabbed a sizable portion of the U.S. market. Lemke, who says his American counterparts have taught him to be bolder and experiment with new categories, is now expanding his Berlin brewery as the trend reaches Germany, where the number of micro breweries has increased by more than 30 percent since 2005 to about 670.

"We Germans were convinced we're making the world's best beer but meanwhile, beer diversity suffered," Lemke said while sipping his newest creation, an India Pale Ale with a hint of grapefruit and mango. "Craft brewing is a lucrative and interesting niche and it was a mistake not to do it earlier."

4 tbs unsalted butter

¼ cup chopped shallots

3 tbs flour

2 tbs brown sugar (if using orange sweet potatoes, reduce to 1 tbs)

12 oz brown ale

1 ½ cups chicken broth

3 lbs (6 cups) white sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced

½ tsp salt

½ tsp pepper

¼ tsp cayenne pepper

¼ cup heavy cream

2 tbs olive oil

¼ cup fresh sage leaves

Using an immersion blender, blend until smooth.
