Who knew you could make so many different Pumpkin beers? It is crazy how many variations there are on this ever growing seasonal. We have session Pumpkin beers, beers made with Pumpkin, beers made with Pumpkin spices, beers made with Pumpkin seeds, Imperial Pumpkins, beers with roasted Pumpkin, dark pumpkin beers, light pumpkin beers. Where does this end and can we drink all this Pumpkin beer before the we turn into a Pumpkin? Don't get me wrong....there are some great Pumpkin beers out there. I'm just in Pumpkin overload! I'm seeing shades of orange and brown everywhere I look and I have yet to crack my first bottle of my favorite Pumpkin beer. Hopefully I will get in the mood when the temp drops below 90 F. I think it is snowing somewhere up North so maybe in the next week or two.
And then don't forget about Oktoberfest either. Apparently you can't be from anywhere besides Germany and brew an Oktoberfest. I actually am pretty sure it has to be called an "Oktoberfest style" beer or Märzen as only breweries in Munich Germany can technically brew an "Oktoberfest". But that hasn't stopped everyone and their brothers from brewing this style of beer and there are some really really good ones out there right now. Oktoberfest officially starts on Saturday September 20th in Germany and lasts until Sunday October 5th. But here in the US, most Oktoberfest celebrations will not start until sometime in October unless you go to a truly authentic German bar or restaurant. But don't let that stop you from having a few of these delicious beers right now. I will tell you from experience that there is almost no better beer pairing than German sausage and authentic Oktoberfest style (or Märzen) beer. Mmmmm...the thought of this is making me very thirsty and hungry right now. Now to decide between Bratwurst or Knockwurst. Life is full of tough decisions....maybe I'll have both.

Around the World in a Dozen Toasts

By: Drew Lazor
Toasting is a universal language, and an especially useful one when in foreign territory. Drew Lazor winds his way around the world with a guide to hoisting glasses from China to Mexico and back again.
Philip Duff didn't know Korean. And the 15 Korean businessmen with whom he'd just sat down to eat-in the Netherlands, no less-didn't speak a lick of English. But the impenetrable linguistic barrier didn't prevent Duff, a beverage consultant who visits dozens of countries a year, from painting the town six to seven shades of red.
"Dinner, drinks, everything, for hours on end," says Duff, a native Dubliner who now operates his company, Liquid Solutions, out of New York, "pretty much communicating exclusively through toasts."
Raising a toast-hoisting glasses, touching rims and offering pleasantries, to honor someone, something or some shared purpose-is the most obvious way to break the ice, then pour booze all over it. "It's a universal language," he says.

This College Actually Lets Students Minor in Craft Beer
By: Matt Vasilogambros
Some college graduates might joke they minored in beer studies. But that's actually the case for a new group of students at Paul Smith's College in upstate New York.
This month, the college announced it would start offering a craft-brewing minor to all of its students. But unlike traditional brewing programs, most of these courses get into the business of craft beer-how to market, distribute, and promote the increasingly popular adult beverage.
Joe Conto, the director of the Hospitality, Resort and Tourism Management Program at Paul Smith's, is the man behind the new academic option. A homebrewer himself (he's dabbled with pale ales and a Saison), Conto found himself drawn to the minor through the growing popularity of craft beer nationwide and through the food courses he was already teaching.
