August 1, 2014
The Hop is perhaps the single most important ingredient that has driven the craft beer revolution in America. Yes there are lots of amazing beers that have come from some of the finest craft breweries in the land that span the style categories from sour to stout but it is the hop that has driven the renaissance. In the beginning some of the first American craft breweries explored more vibrant hops and started to use the quintessential American Cascade hop to flavor their pales ales. This brought about the first true American Pale Ales which lead to the America IPA. And indeed, the largest and most successful category in craft beer to this day remains to be the IPA category.

The IPA category has been bursting at the seams though. First driven by the ever expanding desire to use the hop in a multitude of different beers and styles, we now have Belgian IPAs, Imperial IPAs, Rye IPAs, Black IPAs, and even now IPLs or Imperial Pale Lagers all seeking to experiment with the bitterness and aromas of hops. And that doesn't even scratch the surface of this style as the cross breeding of hops has lead to generations of hops that have all types of different flavors and aromas. From the grapefruit and grassiness of Amarillo hops to the mango and papaya of Calypso hops, brewmasters have a whole new flavor and aroma palate to play with.

So with National IPA day approaching on August 7th, be sure to pick out a few of your favorite IPAs or Pale Ales and maybe a few you have never had before. Crack 'em open and pour them into a glass. Enjoy the heady aromas of the hops mingling with the malts and Co2 and then take a good sip and allow the flavors to explode across your palate. There really is no substitute for a delicious fresh hoppy beer.

BEER NEWS
IPA Day Returns August 7th
By: Ashley Routson

On Thursday, Aug. 7, join beer enthusiasts, breweries and bars across the globe in a collective toast to one of craft beer's most iconic styles: the India pale ale.

Founded in 2011, IPA Day is a universal movement created to unite the voices of craft beer enthusiasts, bloggers and brewers worldwide, using social media as the common arena for connecting the conversation.

IPA Day is not the brainchild of a corporate marketing machine, nor is it meant to serve any particular beer brand. IPA Day is opportunity for all breweries, bloggers, businesses and consumers to connect and share their love of craft beer. It is an opportunity for the entire craft beer culture to combine forces and advocate craft beer through increased education and global awareness.

Craft Beer Reaches New Depths As Mainers Brew A Batch From Seaweed
By: Jay Field

More craft breweries are using exotic ingredients in their creations these days. There are ales made with all kinds of fruit, beers infused with coriander and other spices, stouts brewed with oysters - even beer made from yeast scraped off 35 million-year-old whale bones. But what about a beer made with seaweed?

At Marshall Wharf Brewing Co. on the Belfast, Maine, waterfront, new beers begin their journey into draft lines and pint glasses inside two large tanks. Marshall Wharf has a reputation for making some unconventional beers - a stout with locally sourced oysters, for example, and a wheat-infused kolsch with jalapeno and habanero peppers. A few years ago, David Carlson, the brewing company's owner, discovered a beer from Scotland, called Kelpie, made with seaweed.

The Price Of Beer All Over The World

By: Peter Terlato

Beer and traveling go hand-in-hand. There's nothing like downing a cold one after an arduous day trekking the Balkan Peninsula, marching along China's Great Wall, or perusing art museums in Paris.

Given this phenomenon, Finances Online has released an epic infographic that breaks down the price of beer around the world.

Traveling to Southeast Asia is a sure bet to score some super cheap grog, while eastern Europe serves up some of the best budget beers money can buy.
Given the region's low levels of alcohol tolerance and incredibly high prices, the Middle East is one place to avoid if you're seeking value for money booze.

Chocolate Stout Baked Mac n' Cheese

This über cheesy mac n' cheese is made with your favorite stout and five different types of cheese, including Gorgonzola, which pairs wonderfully with stouts.

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup chocolate stout (or dry stout)
1 cup half and half
1/4 lb. Brie
8 oz. cream cheese (1 package)
3/4 cup crumbled Gorgonzola cheese
1 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
2 cups dry elbow pasta
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup panko or bread crumbs

DIRECTIONS:

Heat oven to 350°F.

Boil pasta in salted water until al dente, strain and put aside.

In a medium size, heavy-bottom pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour to form a light roux. Slowly whisk in the beer and half and half.

Add the Brie and cream cheese to the sauce, stirring until the cheeses are melted and incorporated. Stir in the Gorgonzola, cheddar and half the Parmesan. Stir until cheese sauce is blended and then add the pasta. Taste and adjust the seasonings as desired with salt and pepper.

Pour mixture into a baking pan and top with remaining Parmesan cheese and panko crumbs. Cook 30-40 minutes (until bubbling on the edges and browned on the top).
