July 18, 2014

Being a native of Florida, I grew up going to Disney on a regular basis. One of my favorite parts of the park was Futureland, a place where my young imagination could go wild with thoughts of flying cars, space travel, robots and futuristic living.  It all looked so bright and amazing.  Computers were the promise to bring all of this to reality.  They promised to simplify all of life's menial tasks and make everything better for us.  To a certain extent those early fascinations in this fantasy world of Disney exist today.  Our technology with computers and phones has certainly surpassed what I had dreamed of as a child.  But has all of this made our lives easier?  Do we have less work or more?  Do we spend more time with our families or more time sending emails, posting on Facebook, and sending tweets?

So how does this relate to beer you may be asking yourself?  I look around the beer aisle lately and I am in adult beer drinker fantasy land.  A world of beers that we never imagined.  A world where hops produce flavors of tropical fruits, pine, and fresh cut grass.  A place where brewmasters add coffee, maple, rosemary, blueberry, oak chips and cocoa nibs.  Where beer isn't just aged in stainless steel but rum barrels, and chardonnay barrels or giant oak foeders with souring yeasts and bacteria.

But just like technology, has all this beer made our lives better?  It is certainly interesting.  It is fun.  It is fascinating to discuss the complexities of flavors and aromas. But what about just enjoying a beer for being a beer?  Enjoying it for the pure pleasure of the ritual of kicking back, popping off the top, pouring it gently into a glass, absorbing the beautiful aroma and finally taking a refreshing gulp of deliciousness. This is how the Belgians enjoy beer. So on this upcoming Belgian Independence Day, enjoy a few beers like this. No analyzing.  No rating. No comparing.  Just pure enjoyment...what beer is meant for.

Funky Buddha 3 Summer time, you've met your match. Funky Buddha Small Axe Big IPA

Stone Unapologetic IPA
Pours golden with a creamy white head. Intensely aromatic with stone fruit, white wine and berries driving most of the hop character. Dry and very bitter. Just the way we like it!
ABV: 8.8% COMING SOON!

Ommegang Belgian Independence Day IPA
Light, golden amber in hue, slightly hazy with a thick head and Belgian lacing. Aroma is intensely fruity and tropical with notes of blueberry, pineapple, mango, and melon with underlying grapefruit. The palate is dominated with juicy hop character with sweet ripe fruit flavors and a citrus twang. Moderate to strong bitterness and a fairly low malt flavor profile allows the hop profile to shine. A moderate, yet not cloying bitter finish. (Draft Only) ABV: 7.5%

Peak Organic Brewing Citrus Saison

We're fans of a refreshing squeeze of citrus in our drinks. So we made a unique beer to showcase that, with Belgian Saison yeast to give surprising complexity. It's kind of like a Shandy, but, you know, in a classy way. ABV: 4.6%

Narragansett 1975 Throwback Cans
Crush a 1975 'Gansett throwback can while you watch Shark Week  in honor of Robert Shaw, aka Captain Quint. So we're reintroducing a 1970s can design featured in the movie ''Jaws.'' This design depicting a ship and a red diagonal stripe is being re-released temporarily in honor of the Discovery Channel's ''Shark Week,'' which begins August 10th. In the 1975 film, Capt. Sam Quint, the shark hunter played by the late Robert Shaw, crushes a can of 'Gansett with one hand to intimidate the oceanographer, Matt Hooper played by Richard Dreyfuss.
Stone Stochasticity Project Quadrotriticale

Trappist ales as we know them have a proud lineage dating back nearly a century. Rather than follow the footsteps of the monks who forged the quadrupel-the warmest and darkest of monastery offerings-we aimed to test its inherent makeup. In doing so, we added triticale, a hybrid grain combining the pleasant flavor of wheat with the elemental durability and spice of rye, to breathe new life into the malt bill. Because of this, this reimagined brew comes across differently than its classic Belgian predecessors, and beautifully so. Lower in sweetness, but rich with flavors mirroring dried fruit, it's a modern interpretation of one of the most historically sacred styles on Earth. 9.3%  ABV

Oskar Blues Old Chub Nitro Cans

This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale is brewed with bodacious amounts of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt. Old Chub features semi-sweet flavors of cocoa and coffee, and a wee-bit of smoke. A head-turning treat for malt heads and folks who think they don't dig dark beer. 8% ABV

Founders Double Trouble

An imperial IPA that was brewed to turn your world upside down. Hops will get you coming and going. Pungent aromatics up front pair with a malt-balanced backbone and a smooth, bitter finish. 9.4% ABV

Avery Anniversary Ale - Twenty One

Twenty One is built on a foundation of dark specialty malts, framed by sturdy IBUs and crowned with a monumental dry hop addition of two of our favorites, Amarillo and Simcoe. 8.3% ABV

Dogfish Head Rosabi

The vivid rose hue of this imperial Pale Ale comes from a combination of Munich and Caramel malts and a touch of red rice from Louisiana, birthplace of musician and collaborator Julianna Barwick. Citrusy Simcoe and Centennial feed Julianna's love of hops, and the star of the show is her go-to ingredient: wasabi. What's hoppy? ... Wasabi. The Japanese root adds bittering and herbal notes similar to hops, with its subtle heat creeping in after the kick of carbonation. 8% ABV

Red Brick Matcha Super Green Yuzu IPA

Resolve your yin and yang and awaken your true brew destiny with this IPA infused with Super Matcha Green Yuzu tea. Earthy, grassy and bright citrus notes balance on a katana blade with the nimble touch of sweet honey malt. Take a sip and honor the Super Matcha warrior spirit within, unleashing the strength, vitality and fortune of a great brew ninja. 7.8% ABV

Red Brick Brother Leo

Rehearse your Gregorian chants, don your monastic habit and take your vows to the lost order of Brother Leo, devoted to the solitary contemplation of the ancient brew mysteries. Your new-found devotion to drink this heavenly combination of Belgian and American grains with its mild spiciness, moderate fruity esters, and boldly hoppy notes of citrus, pine, and lemon, encourages sacrifice from the worldly distractions of lesser beers to worship in unity with this inspired brew. 8.0% ABV

Summit Saga IPA Cans

Named after the Norse goddess Sga, drinking companion of the God Odin. With a divine tropical fruit hop aroma and clean, assertive bitterness. Now available in 12oz cans!

Greene's Dry Hopped Lager

Made from gluten-free ingredients - millet, sorghum, rice, buckwheat, hops, water, and yeast (with no wheat or barley) - it is dry-hopped with West Coast USA hops for an appealing floral finish. Golden pale in color, the nose is a mix of citrus-floral aroma sensations, clean with a light malt taste, but with an herbal, hoppy aftertaste. Body and mouthfeel are light and refreshing. 4.1% ABV

BEER NEWS
New machine is like Keurig for craft beer
By: Neal Augenstein

Think Keurig, but for beer.

A soon-to-be-released dispenser will enable craft beer lovers to conveniently store and serve a wide variety of beer at home, right from the brewery, fresh on tap.

The Synek draft system calls itself "the world's first portable tap house," chilling and serving craft beer in a glass, and eliminating a major problem facing microbreweries and home brewers -- storage.

The Final Frontier for Craft Beer
By: Shane Dixon Kavanaugh

Oregon beer geeks are about to launch a rocket full of brewer's yeast into outer space, hoping what comes back is an otherworldly brew

Sometime next week, an Oregon beer maker will try to answer one of life's most important questions: Is it possible to brew space beer? As part of its experiment in extraterrestrial brewing, the Ninkasi Brewing Company-with the aid of a few rocketeers-will launch into outer space a rocket packed with brewer's yeast. If it withstands the harsh journey and returns usable, success! Delicious suds with a supersonic pedigree.

Celebrate Belgian Independence Day with These Beer & Food Pairings
By: Chris Van Orden via Ontaponline.com

We Americans love our beer, and rightly so, but when it comes to finding the perfect drink to accompany a meal, many believe that only wine will do the trick. That's just flat out wrong. Beer can hold its own against even the most haute of cuisines, and if there's any country we should look to for inspiration, it's Belgium.

Yes, Belgium. These people live and breathe beer, giving it a prime space on the dining table and treating it with a respect that borders on reverence. Certain beers are prized for their "digestibility", a quality that is hard to define but roughly signifies a beer's dryness and ability to be enjoyed without making the drinker feel full. The Belgian love of food and drink reaches its apex in the aptly named cuisine la bire, in which dishes are designed to be enjoyed with particular brews, often by introducing the same liquid into the cooking process.
