May 23, 2014

About one year ago, South Florida was home to about 3 local breweries (not including brewpubs).  Today that number has blossomed into 6 that are actively producing beer and another 5-8 that are either in planning, have their location, have their equipment, or are getting ready to begin producing beer. I know for a fact there are even more out there that are working on plans to open a brewery or at least begin producing beer. Look across the state...what used to be considered a beer wasteland has begun to turn into a beer mecca. The last and final frontier for craft beer in the US...the relatively untapped market that has finally caught the craft beer bug. I am pretty sure statewide that we will have 100 active breweries in near future.

So what does this look like in 5 years? 10 years? Can Florida support and sustain this type of growth in the local craft beer market. It will certainly be interesting to watch. I always like to look at other parts of the country particularly the ones that have had craft breweries for extended periods of time to see what is possible. For example, San Diego county has over 84 breweries! Are all of these succeeding? I'm not sure but a good percentage are certainly doing very well. What about up in the Pacific Northwest where craft beer was hot some 25+ years ago? Market share for craft beer has just surpassed the market share for the two major domestic brewery powerhouses for the first time EVER!

It is an incredible time in the craft beer industry across the country. But with all this good news, we often forget what happened in the late 90's when craft beer was peaking the first time. Lots of "fakers" and lots of inexperienced brewers jumped into the industry to try and capitalize on the huge opportunities. But they made sub-par beer, didn't know how the industry worked, and didn't understand how to run successful businesses in the beer industry. Disaster! Lots of closings and lots of bad tastes left in potential craft beer consumer's mouths...both literally and figuratively. Will this happen again? It certainly doesn't seem that way right now...but I think we are just at the beginning here in Florida.

Support your local craft brewery but also let them know what you really think. Let them know when they make a great beer and let them know when they make a sub-par beer. For local craft to succeed, we need local craft brewers to be brewing great beer. They can't fix it if they don't know that it is broke. The future of local craft in Florida is relying on you!

SaltWater Screaming Reels IPA

Our Screamin' Reels India Pale Ale is anything but pale.  The hops in this beer slam your tongue like a school of dolphin in the spread making those reels scream!  This hoppy Florida IPA pays homage to the West Coast style, with 'piney'  and  'citrusy' flavors, accented with a subtle malt backbone, suiting the palates of most hop heads. 7.5% ABV

SaltWater Bone-a-fide Blonde

You'll want to hook into with this blonde again and again.  A classic, and easy drinking unfiltered Blonde,  showcased by the Belgian yeast we use in fermentation gives this beer a smooth flavorful finish that keeps you hooked up to the last drop. 6%ABV

SaltWater South End Session Ale

Named after one of our favorite local breaks; 'South End' Session Ale is a modest beer with low % ABV, but  does not lack in flavor. The subtle malt backbone is balanced out with a very light hop profile.  This beer is perfect for a long day at the beach or on the boat, perfect after that session! Our 'South End' Session Ale is low in bitterness, all of these attributes combine to make this Extra Pale Ale smooth and easy to drink. 4.5% ABV

Ommegang Cooperstown Ale

Lightly golden-straw hue with a lasting thick, white head. Aromas of sweet malt, floral with slight citrus are followed by delicate herbal notes. Faintly sweet giving way to mellow, lightly floral hop flavor and notes of banana and pears from our signature house yeast. Nicely balanced with a clean herbal-hopped finish makes this an enjoyably, quaffable ale. 5.5% ABV

Narragansett Del's Shandy

The second release in Narragansett's "Hi Neighbor Mash-Up" series, the new offering pairs the beer with the Rhode Island lemonade, a summertime thirst-quenching favorite. The perfect balance of malty sweetness and citrus tartness. 5% ABV

Innis & Gunn Toasted Oak IPA

India Pale Ale first made its name in the 19th century. Here's hoping our pioneering IPA can make its mark too.

Its fervent hoppy character hails from the unique addition of large quantities of hops at three separate points during brewing. The result is a beer that's rounded yet refreshing, with delicate floral notes and oodles of zesty freshness.

5.6% ABV

Sea Dog Sunfish

Sea Dog Sunfish is a delicate wheat beer with hints of peach and grapefruit. This is a refreshing session beer that can be enjoyed all year long. The name Sunfish represents refreshment, outdoor enjoyment, activity, and fun. 4.6% ABV

Red Brick Hoplanta

Hoppier than a frog in a buggy summer, our flagship American style India Pale Ale tips its cap to the lazy porch days and honey colored skies of a great Southern city. Kick back and enjoy the aroma of citrus with hints of native pine balanced by a distinctive Vienna malt backbone. 6.2 % ABV

Rodenbach Caractere Rouge

Rated "World Class" with a 99 score on Beer Advocate. A first test project, co-developed by Viki Geunes, is a variation of Rodenbach beer which traditionally matures for two years in large oak casks. The brewers allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is Rodenbach Caractere Rouge, en exceptional Rodenbach with fruit maceration. 7% ABV

Rogue Marionberry Braggot

Situated just across from 40 acres of Rogue hops, colonies of bees were carefully kept, fed and smoked and the honey was uncapped, extracted , filtered and finally infused into refreshing Marionberry Braggot. This ale is brewed with Marionberries and Rogue Farms Hopyard Honey. 11.2% ABV

Ace Apple Cider

Ace Apple Cider has an apple nose and a clean dry finish. It tastes like a Sauvignon Blanc. It is made out of 100 percent apple juice and is all natural, gluten-free and low-calorie like the rest of our cider range. The alcohol is a 5% by volume. This cider goes well with all pork dishes and seafood as an alternative to the high alcohol of wine and heaviness of beer.

Ace Perry Cider

First released in 1996, this is the first Perry cider made in California. It became very popular very quickly, as it is so refreshing. It is made from apple and pear juices. We use champagne yeast in all our ciders and ferment for 10-14 days. We then cold-filter 4 times and carbonate them before putting into bottles or kegs. The ingredients are all natural juices. It is 5% alcohol by volume with a lovely pear nose and a smooth semi-sweet mouth feel with a dry finish.

Ace Berry Cider

Fermented in apple juices for 14 days to dryness and then add back fresh blackberry and raspberry juices to produce a light purple cider. Ace Berry Cider has just the right amount of fruitiness and sweetness; it is refreshing chilled without being cloying. It is an all-natural, gluten-free, cold filtered cider. Ace Berry Cider is winning a lot of friends across the country. This cider is now available year round. 5% ABV

Ace Joker Cider

Joker is our driest cider, made from 100% apple juice; it has champagne characteristics, yeasty with an alcohol of 6.9%. It won the 2013, San Diego Cider and Beer Festival and took a Gold Ribbon as the "Best Cider" in the competition. Joker is popular with beer and wine drinkers and makes a great base for Jomosas, fresh OJ on Joker over ice or Snakebites, lager and Joker or Black Satins, stout and Joker.

Ace Pineapple Cider

Ace Pineapple is the world's first ever Pineapple cider. We love Pineapples in California, so we tried adding it to our apple cider and it resulted in this tropical libation! 5% ABV

Stone Collective Distortion IPA

An imperial India pale ale ably backed by Nugget, Comet and Calypso hops, and amplified care of a healthy dry-hopping with Vic's Secret, a new Australian hop, adding citrus and tropical fruit oomph. To give this modern masterpiece some soulful, classic character, we traced the roots of brewing to the days when Old World herbs were used to spice beers, adding in coriander and, a first for us, elderberries. To stand up to that sumptuous spice and blaring bitterness, we added golden naked oats, which are lightly roasted and add body and enhanced mouthfeel to the brew like a steady, unbreakable backbeat to an incendiary jam solo. Sit back, crank the volume and get lost in this operatic incarnation of genres combined in the name of invention. 9.3% ABV

Duvel Tripel Hop Mosaic

Duvel Tripel Hop is brewed with three hop varieties and each year the third hop is changed to provide its own unique taste and aroma. This keeps the final flavor profile surprisingly exciting for any true beer lover. For 2014 our brewers selected the exotic hop Mosaic from the USA.By using three instead of two hop varieties to brew, we obtain additional hop aromas and an increased bitterness. The typical Duvel palate is enriched with Mosaic hops providing fresh notes of tropical fruit and an intriguing, blueberry flavor. Mosaic hops are added again during 'dry-hopping', extracting additional hop aromas into the beer. The higher aromatic intensity rounds out the beer, backing the final alcohol content of 9.5%.

Crazy Mountain Lawyers Guns and Money

This beer began as a celebration of our January anniversary, but it is now being incorporated into a year round offering. They use an assortment of crystal malts and throw a little Belgian Candi into the Brew Kettle to give a hearty maltiness. Dry hopping with American Hops gives this English style a refreshing American twist. 10% ABV

Crazy Mountain Neomexicanus

Neomexicanus Native Pale Ale is an exploration of a largely undocumented hop, native to the South Western United States. This ale offers a citrusy aroma with a distinct lemon lime and guava character while maintaining a moderate acidity that accentuates the delicate flavors and bouquet of this brew.

6.0% ABV

Boulder 35th Anniversary Imperial Black IPA

Dark black in color with a big all-around hop presence, Boulder 35 remains a well-balanced big IPA with a smooth roasted malt flavor. And at 9.5% alc./vol., it's a perfect beer to share among friends while raising your glass to Colorado's vibrant craft beer scene, all started 35 years ago.

Southern Tier Farmers Tan

When the sun hangs high overhead and the stars don't glimmer until well into the evening, there's nothing better than grabbing another beer. We specially crafted Farmer's Tan to be the beer you enjoy on those long summer days. At 4.6% abv, it's one of our lightest, with a smooth body and easy finish. We carefully limited the ingredients to two types of hops and two types of malts for a perfectly balanced, "sessional" India Pale Ale. We've got the beer covered. It's up to you to keep the sunscreen on.

Breckenridge Summer Can Sampler

How to Talk Like a Beer Snob: A Beginner's Guide
By: Andy Kryza

Kicking it in a brewpub or in line at a beer fest can feel like being in a weird, foreign country full of bearded dudes speaking a completely different language. But, unlikebeing a tourist abroad, there's no conversational pocket translator to help you differentiate between your barleys and bungholes... until now. Behold, Thrillist's Conversational Beer Snob for Beginners, a snob-to-English translation guide to understanding what the hell people are talking about between sips of saison. To wit:

"I'm really into big beers."

"I exclusively drink beers with a huge alcohol percentage and don't really care that much about the flavor."

"This is a very sessionable ale."
"I am about to justify drinking nine beers before noon."

Germany's Beer-Brewing Nun, Sister Doris
By: Tom Conrad

She was called to the mash tun nearly 45 years ago. She's in love with brewing and is passionate about beer. It's hard not to be smitten with Sister Doris.

But, hey, she's a nun, so don't fall too hard. Lavish your affection on her beer instead. It may tempt you to become a Catholic -- or not. But for sure, it will jump to your top cut list.

In Germany a beer is not just a beer. It's nourishment. Some people call it flüssiges Brot -- liquid bread.

Ingredients

For the Crepes:
2 large eggs,
3/4 cup cream ale, pale ale or wheat beer
½ cup whole milk
1 cup flour
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 tbs melted butter (plus additional for pan)
pinch salt

For the apples:
5 tbs butter
1 lbs (about 3) granny smith apples, peeled, cores and thinly sliced
1/3 cup brown sugar
½ tsp cinnamon (Vietnamese cinnamon preferred)
pinch salt
¼ cup cream ale, pale ale or wheat beer

Put all the crepe ingredients in a blender, blend until combined. Put the batter in the fridge for one hour and up to 12 (can be made the night before).

To make the apples melt the butter in a pan over medium heat. Add the apples, brown sugar, salt and cinnamon. Cook until the apples have softened. Add the beer and simmer until the liquid has thickened to a syrup, set aside.

In a 10 inch non-stick skillet melt 1 tablespoon butter.

Add about ¼ cup batter, swirl the pan to spread the batter into a thin circle.

Cook over medium high heat until the top is dry. Flip the crepe using a spatula, cook until the underside is golden brown. Continue until all batter is used.

Fill the crepes with apples, serve warm.
