Patriotic Act: American Craft Beer Week Edition

Less than a week away, the greatest thing to happen to our fair nation will be upon us...American Craft Beer Week! This is the time of year where we in Florida can celebrate the craft beer community with the rest of the country. Will there be tap takeovers of Florida beer in Montana? Who knows?! Anything is possible during ACBW.

If you love craft, you know the community is small but tight knit. The support we continue to see in our own communities for the craft brewers is amazing and continues to grow every day, which puts Florida on the map for the ACBW loyalist party. This week, do your patriotic duty. Hoist a craft beer and give a collective "ahhh" of satisfaction with your country men to an American made pint of awesome.

Cheers!

Duvel Triple Hop Mosiac

Duvel is traditionally brewed with two hop varieties.

Duvel Tripel Hop is brewed with three hop varieties and each year the third hop is changed to provide its own unique taste and aroma. This keeps the final flavor profile surprisingly exciting for any true beer lover. For 2014 our brewers selected the exotic hop Mosaic from the USA.

By using three instead of two hop varieties to brew, we obtain additional hop aromas and an increased bitterness. The typical Duvel palate is enriched with Mosaic hops providing fresh notes of tropical fruit and an intriguing, blueberry flavor.

Mosaic hops are added again during 'dry-hopping', extracting additional hop aromas into the beer. The higher aromatic intensity rounds out the beer, backing the final alcohol content of 9.5%.

Boulder 35th Anniversary
Imperial Black IPA

A word from Boulder "It's 1979. Home brewing recently became legal, and two CU professors are making history establishing Colorado's First Craft Brewery, Boulder Beer. Thirty-five years later, we're celebrating their pioneering spirit and carrying on our history of innovation with a bold, unique, hand-crafted IPA: Boulder Beer's 35th Anniversary Imperial Black IPA.

Dark black in color with a big all-around hop presence, Boulder 35 remains a well-balanced big IPA with a smooth roasted malt flavor. And at 9.5% alc./vol., it's a perfect beer to share among friends while raising your glass to Colorado's vibrant craft beer scene, all started 35 years ago.

Party like it's 1979!"

Southern Tier Farmer's Tan
When the sun hangs high overhead and the stars don't glimmer until well into the evening, there's nothing better than grabbing another beer. We specially crafted Farmer's Tan to be the beer you enjoy on those long summer days. At 4.6% abv, it's one of our lightest, with a smooth body and easy finish. We carefully limited the ingredients to two types of hops and two types of malts for a perfectly balanced, "sessional" India Pale Ale. We've got the beer covered. It's up to you to keep the sunscreen on.
Crazy Mountain Neomexicanus
Neomexicanus Native Pale Ale is an exploration of a largely undocumented hop, native to the South Western United States. This ale offers a citrusy aroma with a distinct lemon lime and guava character while maintaining a moderate acidity that accentuates the delicate flavors and bouquet of this brew.  ABV: 6.0%
Crazy Mountain
Lawyers Guns & Money
This beer began as a celebration of our January anniversary, but it is now being incorporated into a year round offering. They use an assortment of crystal malts and throw a little Belgian Candi into the Brew Kettle to give a hearty maltiness. Dry hopping with American Hops gives this English style a refreshing American twist. ABV: 10%
Highland Brewing
20th Anniversary Scotch Ale
Rich caramel and roasted notes blend with a subtle hop nose to create an ale suited for the finest occasions. Medium-bodied, it has a brown-red hue from a Caramel malt and roasted barley. It is brewed with the finest traditional Scottish malts and English Fuggle hops. A late addition of Sterling hops imparts a slightly spicy nose, ever so subtle. 8% ABV
Coronado Sock Knocker
Amarillo, Centennial, Columbus, and Simcoe hops unite to produce an immensely floral, botanical nose and a veritable explosion of citrus and pine on the palate. With an even more obscene hop overload than our infamous Islander IPA, it's an India Pale Ale truly deserving of its imperial crown. 8.5% ABV
Shipyard American Pale Ale
Realeased in the UK in 2013, this All-American Pale Ale is made with West Coast hops and has a delicate dry finish with hints of citrus and grapefruit. This APA is non-traditional in the sense that it is not intended to taste hoppy or bitter, but fresh and lively, a perfect summertime sessional beer. 4.5% ABV
Fort Collins Out of the Ashes
Smoked Marzen
A bomber series of limited release beers that showcase the varied and unique flavors and aromas delivered from malt smoked over wood-burning fires. This series is meant to be shared with creative food and friends. The fourth member of the series, Smoked Mrzen, boasts rich caramel and molasses sweetness with a touch of nuttiness. A classic German style brewed with American boldness.
5.6% ABV
Fort Collins Maibock
A smooth malty flavor attained from the richness of Munich malts that finishes with gentle warming sweetness. Toffee notes and understated hop bitterness round out the bock experience. Brewed in the Fall, Aged in the Winter, Celebrated in the Spring. Prost! 6.4% ABV
Stone Saison
A word from Stone: "In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale stoked with lemon zest, plus lemon thyme and lavender straight from Stone Farms. This spring-to-summer saison is citric and herbal on the palate with a dry, peppery finish. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn't your everyday saison. It's our saison-100% Stone. Celebrate the sunny season with an authentic taste of our farm and, with it, our commitment to quality. 6% ABV
Due South Session Pale Ale
Light, easy drinking pale ale with biscuity like malt notes and a subtle citrus hop character 4.8% ABV
Due South Summertime Craft Lager
In Florida it's Summertime practically all year. We created this easy drinking, full flavored craft lager with our home state in mind. German Pilsner malts provide a nice toasted flavor while crystal malts provide a slight sweetness. The living is certainly easy with a Summertime Craft Lager. 5.3% ABV
Look out for new and returning favorites like Boulder Cold Hop, Ommegang Gnomegang, Humboldt's Black Xantus, Peak Summer, Founders Rubaeus,  Shiner Ruby Redbird, Coronado Frogs Breath IPA.

World's Most Alcoholic Beers

By: Emily Alford of The Daily Meal

Did you know that you're currently sipping lager in the midst of an all-out beer war? It's true. Brewers all over the world have been in a no-holds-barred competition to see who can brew the highest alcohol-by-volume (ABV), best tasting beer, creating concoctions for the past four years that contain more alcohol than whiskey while still retaining that earthy yeast flavor that beer lovers crave.

Prior to 2010, the beer world was pretty tame, alcohol-wise. The strongest brews hovered around 20 percent and that was mostly relegated to barley wines, a niche market among beer connoisseurs.

8 Underrated Beer Cities

By: The Huffington Post

Any bona fide beer geek already knows they can find a great brew in Denver,Portland, Oregon, and Dublin. But if you've already tapped the keg on these well-known beer cities, perhaps you and your taste buds are ready to explore a new frontier (with someone else behind the wheel, of course). "You can get beer just about everywhere," said Chris O'Brien, creator of the Beer Activist blog. "People are fermenting grains all over the world." But not every metropolis is a veritable beer city, overflowing with homegrown breweries, gastro pubs and beer festivals. For this reason, U.S. News selected a few spots where you may not have considered tipping back a pint. That said, we know this can be a contentious topic among beer aficionados, so keep in mind that this roundup is presented to you in no particular order.

"Florida Breweries" by Gerard Walen is a Guide to Craft Beer in the Sunshine State

By: Doug Fairall of Broward/Palm Beach New Times

For the past few weeks, I've been reading through, section by section, the latest and probably most all-encompassing book to showcase the craft brewing scene in the state of Florida.

Florida Breweries, as it's helpfully and purposefully named, is a primary source on the state of craft beer in the Sunshine State. It's a mix of guide book, short interviews with brewers, and personal anecdotes and recommendations.

In short, it's a collection of beer facts from one of the most trusted beer geeks in the state: Gerard Walen.

Beer Battered Jalapeno Poppers
By: Victor's Food Blog

INGREDIENTS:

For Poppers:
8 oz. Cream Cheese
1/2 Red Onion, diced
Salt and Pepper
8-10 Jalapeno Chillies
1/4 cup Flour
1 1/2 cups Vegetable Oil

For Beer Batter:
1/2 cup Dark Beer (Hint: Porter Works Best)
2 Large Eggs
1 cup Flour
1 tbsp Melted Butter

Directions:

In a processor, blend the cream cheese till smooth. Add the onion, blend and add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

Slice the jalapeno chillies in half lengthwise and remove the seeds, keeping the stem on if possible.

Fill each chilli half with the cream cheese mix and press the filled sides together as a sandwich.

Put the cup of flour in a flat dish. Roll each chilli in the flour so the surface is finely coated. Set aside.

To make the batter, separate the eggs. Whisk the yolks in a bowl and add 1 cup of flour. Add the beer and butter, and whisk till smooth. If too liquid, add a bit more flour. If too thick add a bit more beer.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites till stiff, then fold gently into the batter.

Heat the oil in a large saucepan or wok till hot. Add a pinch of batter to the oil first to see if ready for frying. When the oil bubbles quickly around the batter the oil is ready. Take each chilli, hold by the stem and dip into the batter till coated. Lightly place in the oil and fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side till nicely browned.

Place cooked chillies on paper towels to drain and serve immediately.

Note: Serve with lime sour cream, or sweet chilli jam as an accompaniment.
