I Heart Florida

We love Florida. We all live where others vacation. Pristine beaches and watersports, some really interesting natural wildlife, and of course, Disney World. We truly live in the happiest place on earth.

Another reason to love Florida? Our ever growing craft beer industry! Virtually every corner of Florida has a brewery or brewpub making (award winning!) beers that are not only sought after by local patrons, but bringing in new tourism from all over the world. Events revolving around beer have become a staple in our neighborhoods and with American Craft Beer Week around the corner (May 12-18), Florida has yet again another opportunity to shine in the craft beer scene.

We here at Brown's Specialty Division will continue to work hard to make our state the best place to find craft beer. It's all because of YOU. Yes, you, the very attractive person reading this. YOU are wonderful. YOU are the reason we live in the happiest place on earth! YOU are the reason craft breweries do what they do. We can't say THANK YOU enough for drinking awesome beer and supporting the efforts of all of our breweries.

Cheers!

Highland Brewing
20th Anniversary Scotch Ale
Rich caramel and roasted notes blend with a subtle hop nose to create an ale suited for the finest occasions. Medium-bodied, it has a brown-red hue from a Caramel malt and roasted barley. It is brewed with the finest traditional Scottish malts and English Fuggle hops. A late addition of Sterling hops imparts a slightly spicy nose, ever so subtle. 8% ABV
Coronado Sock Knocker
Amarillo, Centennial, Columbus, and Simcoe hops unite to produce an immensely floral, botanical nose and a veritable explosion of citrus and pine on the palate. With an even more obscene hop overload than our infamous Islander IPA, it's an India Pale Ale truly deserving of its imperial crown. 8.5% ABV
Shipyard American Pale Ale
Realeased in the UK in 2013, this All-American Pale Ale is made with West Coast hops and has a delicate dry finish with hints of citrus and grapefruit. This APA is non-traditional in the sense that it is not intended to taste hoppy or bitter, but fresh and lively, a perfect summertime sessional beer. 4.5% ABV
Fort Collins Out of the Ashes
Smoked Marzen
A bomber series of limited release beers that showcase the varied and unique flavors and aromas delivered from malt smoked over wood-burning fires. This series is meant to be shared with creative food and friends. The fourth member of the series, Smoked Märzen, boasts rich caramel and molasses sweetness with a touch of nuttiness. A classic German style brewed with American boldness.
5.6% ABV
Fort Collins Maibock
A smooth malty flavor attained from the richness of Munich malts that finishes with gentle warming sweetness. Toffee notes and understated hop bitterness round out the bock experience. Brewed in the Fall, Aged in the Winter, Celebrated in the Spring. Prost! 6.4% ABV
Stone Saison
A word from Stone: "In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale stoked with lemon zest, plus lemon thyme and lavender straight from Stone Farms. This spring-to-summer saison is citric and herbal on the palate with a dry, peppery finish. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn't your everyday saison. It's our saison-100% Stone. Celebrate the sunny season with an authentic taste of our farm and, with it, our commitment to quality. 6% ABV
Due South Session Pale Ale
Light, easy drinking pale ale with biscuity like malt notes and a subtle citrus hop character 4.8% ABV
Due South Summertime Craft Lager
In Florida it's Summertime practically all year. We created this easy drinking, full flavored craft lager with our home state in mind. German Pilsner malts provide a nice toasted flavor while crystal malts provide a slight sweetness. The living is certainly easy with a Summertime Craft Lager. 5.3% ABV
Lickinghole Creek Magic Beaver
Belgian beer meets American and New Zealand Hops, they live happily ever after.  Named after the Magic Beaver pond on the farm's property, LCCB's Pale Ale is a combination of Belgian Pilsner Malt, authentic Belgian yeast and and American and New Zealand hops.  Delicious and easy to drink.
5.5% ABV
Lickinghole Creek Short Pump Saison
An ode to Belgian Farmhouse Ale.  The Short Pump name comes from the colonial era Short Pump Tavern, a famous mid-way point between Richmond and Charlottesville. Lickinghole Creek's Saison matches Premium Imported Belgian Pilsner Malt with two types of Rye.  First Wort Hopped (an old German brewing technique) with American Grown Galena Hops and Hop Bursted (a newer American technique) with large amounts of Columbus and Nugget hops.  The combination of the malt, rye and hops creates a beer with a distinguished hop aroma, a more undeviating bitterness and a more balanced beer.  Limited quantities of this one!  6.8% ABV
Lickinghole Creek Three Chopt Triple

The Three Chopt name comes from a nearby colonial era trail marked by three hatchet marks on a tree.  LCCB's Tripel is a non-stopped hopped version of a European classic.  We use American grown Sterling and New Zealand grown Motueka hops that help impart a lemon and lime characteristic with a hint of tropical fruit. Multiple hop additions throughout the boil create a textured, full flavor. 9.8% ABV Bottled versions are 100% Bottle Conditioned in our Warm Room.

Rogue Voodoo Doughnut: Third Edition
They say the third time's a charm, and this time the collision of crazies created a Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate ale inspired by Voodoo Doughnut's Voodoo Doll doughnut.  The Voodoo people say the magic is in the hole.  We think it's also in the bottle. 6.75% ABV
Peak Organic Hop Blanc
Hop Blanc is a heavenly White IPA. Local wheat and Belgian yeast give this beer a soft mouthfeel, while Centennial, Simcoe and Citra hops provide a bright rush of tropical and citrus flavors up front. This beer is the cheery, angelic cousin of the more sinister Hop Noir. 6.4% ABV
Peak Organic Fresh Cut
Fresh Cut is a dry-hopped pilsner. Chinook, Citra and Centennial hops provide aromas of citrus, grass and spice. Though the front palate is loud with IPA qualities, the finish is distinctly pilsner- crisp, dry and extremely refreshing. 4.6% ABV
Stone Brewing Variety Pack
Fans in select markets nationwide can purchase a pack of twelve 12-ounce beers featuring Stone IPA, Stone Ruination IPA, Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA and Arrogant Bastard Ale. This is the first time these four beers have been included in one case box, but that's not the only historically significant aspect of the pack. For the first time ever, Arrogant Bastard Ale will be sold in 12-ounce bottles, as opposed to the 22-ounce bottles that have housed this belligerently bold American strong ale for the past 16 years. Although it's tough to imagine this much liquid arrogance fitting inside a more diminutive bottle, the craft beer company has made it a reality via the Stone Mixed 12 Pack.
Cane Vodka Florida Fire Ant
The Latest flavor from Brandon, FL is the new Fire Ant jalapeno flavored vodka. Take a walk on the spicy side and give your Bloody Mary's or Moscow Mules a kick!
Look out for new and returning favorites like Peak Summer, Founders Rubaeus, Native Glades Pale Ale (Now with Citra hops), Magic Hat #9 (Now in 16oz cans), Cascade Blueberry, Cascade Apricot, Cascade Kriek, Cascade The Vine, Shiner Ruby Redbird, Coronado Frogs Breath IPA.

BEER NEWS
Beer Spills into History Books

Beer is so significant in Oregon that somebody should make a historical collection so future generations can study the details of the state's current frothy culture - including, for example, the Cascade aromatic hop used to make beers such as Total Domination or Hammerhead.

At least that's the thinking behind the Oregon Hops & Brewing Archives founded recently at Oregon State University.

"We live in an important moment historically that is reclaiming craft beer heritage and culture," said Peter Kopp, an agricultural historian at New Mexico State University and an unofficial adviser to the OSU project.

People 100 years from now may find in the archives the answer to why Americans drank pale, mass-produced beer for so long in the 20th century - and then switched rapidly to craft brews.

"People are going to stay interested (in beer) for a long time. That's what we're trying to document, this historical shift during the late 20th and early 21st centuries," Kopp said.

Women Changing the "Boys Club" Nature of Craft Brew Business

By: Jeremy Martin of Second Wave Media

Craft beer has become an integral part of our social and economic community but the industry as a whole has always been somewhat of a "boys club" -- a perception that several women from the region would like to see change.

Nationwide, as imbibers are becoming more aware of the craft beer world, shifting their focus away from domestic beer and spirits, women are finding themselves on the vanguard of the revolution.

2014 Guide to Craft Beer at Great American Ballparks

By: ManBearPig with SB Nation

As opposed to the actual baseballing team that takes the field at Great American, there were a lot of exciting changes this offseason with the beer at GABP. First, and most notably, is the Brewery District Bar. This 85 foot beauty runs between sections 117 and 118, down the 3rd base line, and highlights local brewing in Cincinnati. It's pretty amazing how quickly Cincinnati went from a town with almost no beer scene, to a place with a bunch of great breweries putting out quality product. The locals get their moment in the spotlight at the Brewery District Bar with 8 of the 23 beers coming from Cincinnati breweries.

 Beer Tom Collins

By: Brooklyn Brew Shop

INGREDIENTS:

24 oz. citrus beer
1 cup raw sugar
4 oz. of your favorite gin
Juice from 1 lemon
1-2 oz. of seltzer, to top
Maraschino cherries for garnish
(Hint: you can use sour cherries for a kick)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Bring the beer to a boil in a small saucepan. Watch it carefully, as the carbonation may make the beer overflow when heated too quickly.

2. Bring to a vigorous boil, then turn down heat to a low simmer.

3. Keep the beer at a simmer for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the beer has reduced by one-third. Stir every few minutes, to avoid burning.

4. When the beer is reduced, take off the heat and transfer to a microwaveable bowl. Immediately mix in the sugar and stir for 2 to 4 minutes, until completely dissolved. You can add more sugar to taste, but the mixture must be very hot to fully dissolve.

5. Transfer the syrup to another container with a spout (optional) and refrigerate for about an hour to cool.

6. When the syrup has cooled, place 2 ounces of the syrup in a cocktail shaker, and add the gin and lemon juice. Add crushed ice and shake, and strain into a Tom Collins glass or other cocktail glass over ice.

7. Top the cocktail off with seltzer. You can use the remaining beer to top off the cocktail, but it will tone down the sweetness of the cocktail. If desired, mix in more raw sugar with a bar spoon.

8. Add cherries to garnish, and enjoy.

9. Refrigerate the remaining syrup for up to one month. Makes 12 ounces of syrup.
